WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a combined one-hit shutout, the Frostburg State baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-0 victory over Catholic Tuesday afternoon.

The Bobcats (7-6) scored two runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. Juniors John Barrett (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison (Hagerstown)) and Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) led of with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Freshman Tyler Hawthorne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) hit an infield single to score Barrett.

Senior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) laid down a sac bunt to advance the runners to second and third and senior Scott Wilson (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) walked to load the bases. Freshman Matt Donaldson (Garrett, Pa./Meyersdale) singled to right field and Anuszewski scored to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

With Anuszewski and Heatwole on base in the top of the fourth, Wilson hit a home run down the left field line to push FSU’s lead to 5-0.

Senior pitcher Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) surrendered the only hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off double but shut down the next three Cardinal hitters to retire the side.

Frostburg State put up another run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to seal the 7-0 victory. In the seventh, freshman John Northam (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson) came around to score on an error by the CUA third baseman after getting hit by a pitch and eventually stealing third.

The final Bobcat run came in the eighth on an RBI-single from junior Garrett Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Emory & Henry)) to score Heatwole.

The Frostburg State pitching staff gave up only one hit on the afternoon and struck out nine Cardinals; Ridenour accounted for eight K’s in the win.

For Catholic (7-5), Robin Mowatt took the loss giving up five runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out four.

Offensively, five Bobcat hitters had a multiple hit game led by Heatwole going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Wilson going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and one run.

The Bobcats return to the field on Friday when they host Capital Athletic Conference opponent Salisbury for the first of a three-game series at Bob Wells Field at 3:30 pm.
