Heatwole's Sacrifice Lifts Bobcats Past Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) laid down a sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning to bring home the winning run and lift the Bobcats over the Seahawks, 4-3, in Capital Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks (5-4, 1-2) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bobcat pitching staff was able to keep them off the board in the eight remaining frames. St. Mary's (Md.) used three hits to plate its only runs of the game. Matt Baden singled up the middle and stole second to lead off and Eric Gronbeck was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Corey Napier doubled to center to plate the first two runs and came around to score the Seahawks final run on a RBI-double from Keith Johnson.

The Bobcats (5-2, 2-1) cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning when junior Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) reached base on a passed ball and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Classmate Garrett Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Emory & Henry)) singled to left field to put runners on the corners for FSU. Anuszewski came around to score on a Seahawk balk with two outs.

Frostburg State tied the game in the top of the fifth, 3-3. Senior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) doubled down the left field line before classmate Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) tripled to center field to plate Greene. Junior John Barrett (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison (Hagerstown)) reached on an error by the short stop that allowed Ridenour to score and tie the game.

With the first pitch he saw in the top of the sixth, Price doubled down the left field line to put the potential winning run in scoring position. Junior Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) fouled out to right field which allowed Price to advance to third. Heatwole laid down a sacrifice bunt and advanced to second on an error by the Seahawk pitcher and Price crossed the plate to give the Bobcats a 4-3 lead.

Senior pitcher Josh Davis (Freeland, Md./Hereford (Webber International)) was able to pitch him self out of a jam in the sixth inning and keep the Seahawks off the board and preserve the win. Junior Zach O'Dell (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) came out in relief of Davis in the seventh and faced just one batter over the minimum in the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.

Davis threw 6.0 innings giving up three runs, all earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out four. The right hander improved to 2-0 on the season while O'Dell finished the game facing 10 batters giving up just one hit and striking out two. Seahawks' Michael Victory fell to 1-1 on the season giving up four runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out three.

Price led the Bobcats at the plate going 3-for-4 with one run scored and a double.

Frostburg State continues CAC play as it travels to Aberdeen, Md. on Thursday, March 3 to face Stevenson at 2:30 p.m. for the first of a three-game series with the Mustangs.
