FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State men's soccer team lost for the first time in nearly a month and had its seven game unbeaten streak snapped by York (Pa.), 3-1, on Senior Day at Bobcat Stadium.
Both teams got off to fast starts as the Spartans (7-5-4, 3-1-3) jumped ahead 1-0 in the sixth minute on a goal from Antonio Bua. He knocked it home past junior goalkeeper Abiye Jack off a beautiful crossing feed from Cody Pearson from the left side. Bua led York with three shots.
That lead was short-lived as junior Ryan Russell tied the game at 1-1 less than a minute later on a play that looked nearly identical to York's goal. On the Bobcat end, it was sophomore Jared Fohs feeding Russell from the left side. Russell's score was his 13th of the year, tops on the team and in the Capital Athletic Conference. The next closest CAC scorer has seven goals.
The teams traded shots until Aaron Beale ripped a ball from about 30 yards out that beat Jack high. That sent the match into intermission at 2-1.
Although York's Jimmy Garrison put the Spartans ahead, 3-1, in the 72nd minute, Frostburg (9-2-4, 3-2-2) still had a pair of excellent scoring chances after that to try to get back into the game. Russell sprung behind the defense in the 83rd minute and had a great chance to cut the deficit back to one. His shot from the right side was turned away by hard-charging Spartans keeper Ethan Kavanaugh who was successfully able to cut down the angle on the Bobcat forward.
Junior Shawn Baker also couldn't solve Kavanaugh as he nearly headed in a Russell corner kick in the 86th minute. Kavanaugh was able to stick his right paw out and prevent a last-gasp attempt of a Bobcat comeback.
York outshot Frostburg, 13-10. The teams combined for 27 fouls in what became a very physical affair. The loss is Frostburg's first since Sept. 24 at Salisbury and is the team's first loss at home this season.
The Bobcats close their regular season on Tuesday at Marymount.
