FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team suffered a late setback in their 1-0 loss to No. 4 Charleston (WV) at home on Wednesday night.
Â
UC opened the game looking to get on the board quickly, as Tomas Petrungaro fired a 25-yard shot two minutes in that graduate Josiah Emerson was able to tip over the bar on a flying save. From the resulting corner, Yigit Kilic had a chance off a deflection, sticking his leg out to the ball but getting too much on it and sending it high.
Â
The Bobcats had their first pair of chances six minutes in, as freshman Abdallah Soulemana got his head to a throw-in that creeped just the wrong side of the post, then after earning a corner, he did the same on graduate Mateo Cuadros' delivery. At the 13-minute mark, Petrungaro looked for a stunner on a volley from just inside the box but curled it off the outside of his foot and well wide. Frostburg's defense held fairly firm throughout the half, as the Golden Eagles came closest on Caio Moraes shooting from a tight angle that clipped the outside of the post, as he and Petrungaro both had efforts go wide with the last 20 minutes remaining scoreless.
Â
Charleston ramped up their pressure to start the second period, as Martin Echarren saw a shot blocked and another go just wide, then Emerson gathered a flicked header from Jose Suarez Monaco and finally Petrungaro sent a curler high and wide, all within the first seven minutes. Frostburg's defense was able to settle in from that point, limiting UC to just one effort over the next 20 minutes, as Petrungaro tried to beat Emerson at his near post but the Bobcat netminder was equal to it.
Â
With 20 minutes to go, Cuadros had FSU's first shot of the half, catching a volley sweetly but seeing it rise all the way over the bar and out for a goal kick. The Golden Eagles had a shot blocked before reaching Emerson, then with just over 10 minutes left, Cuadros clipped a ball into the box that was met by junior Andrew Denard, as his looping header was tipped over by keeper Luka Felix.
Â
From a corner kick, Charleston sent a shot from distance well past the frame, of the goal, then another blast from deep had the same result. Entering the final few minutes, sophomore Spencer Davis sent a long throw into the box that was met by senior Brian Gomez, who lacked the power needed to beat Felix. Going on a quick counter, UC earned a free kick 40 yards from goal, where Moraes' ball was flicked on by Echarren and took another deflection off a Bobcat head, over the outstretched arm of Emerson for the winning score.
Â
UC held a 16-5 advantage in shots, with four on goal to FSU's two.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg concludes their regular season at 7-4-6 while Charleston improves to 15-2. Both teams will now advance to the MEC Tournament, where the Bobcats secured the North Division's two seed and will face the South's three seed, Salem (WV), at home on Sunday, November 1 at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
