FROSTBURG, Md. - After setting the school record for three-pointers in their last game at Wesley, the Frostburg women's basketball team continued its hot shooting in defeating in-state rival Salisbury, 79-67, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats (6-9, 3-3) have now won two straight in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Frostburg continued its hot shooting in the first half against the Sea Gulls (4-9, 2-3), with freshman guard
Elaina Hummel (Huntington, Pa./Southern Huntington) nailing all three of her attempts from beyong in the arc in the opening 20 minutes. Hummel added seven free throws on seven attempts in the second half to finish with 16 points.
Hummel shared the lead in scoring for the Bobcats with senior center
Mindy Sharp (Marlinton, W.Va./Pocahontas County). Sharp's 16 points came with 11 rebounds, giving her three double-doubles in a row, and seven consecutive games with double-digit rebounds.
Two of her biggest buckets on the afternoon came as Salisbury looked to mount a comeback from a 15-point halftime deficit. The Bobcats took a 44-29 lead into the intermission and extended the lead to 18 on their initial possession with a three by senior forward
Lisa Byer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh). The Gulls, however, fought back and trimmed the lead to just five at 55-50 with 13:11 to play in regulation. Sharp hit a jumper and a lay-up to push the lead to 59-50, and sophomore forward
Stacey Jones (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) capped the mini-run with a basket to extend the lead back to 11 with 9:42 to play.
Salisbury hung around, though, and again cut the lead to five with 5:01 to play. Hummel was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws. After a missed shot, Byer buried a three to once again give Frostburg an 11-point advantage. The Sea Gulls would never seriously threaten the rest of the way, and the Bobcats had clawed their way back to a .500-record in the league.
Byer finished with 15 points, and sophomore guard Stephanie Straka (Jerome, Pa./Conemaugh Township) became the fourth Bobcat in double figures with 14 points to go along with seven assists.
The Frostburg State women will look to continue their winning streak when they host Stevenson on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
