Baseball Uses 28 Hits to Power Its Way Past AMCC Opponent Pitt-Greensburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team used a combined 28 hits to pick up its first sweep of an AMCC opponent Wednesday afternoon as Frostburg bats came alive to take the first game 17-6 and the second game 7-6.

Frostburg State (16-8, 4-2) had a season-high 17 runs in the first game as eight of nine starters picked up at least one hit. Senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) started the hitting spree off with a solo shot down the left field line. FSU continues to dominate games when they score first pushing their record to 10-4.

Pitt-Greensburg (7-10, 3-3) put two runs on the board in the top of the second on two hits, one being a one-run homerun to left field. UPG led 2-1 going into the bottom of the second. FSU answered with three runs on two hits and a UPG error in the home half of the inning. Sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) started the inning with a walk. Junior Tim Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) singled to put two runners on. Senior Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) reached on a throwing error by the catcher that allowed Anuszewski to score and tie the game 2-2. Kroboth picked up his second and thrid RBIs of the game with a two-run single to center field scoring Sutcliffe and Derr.

FSU added five more runs in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 9-2 after three full innings. Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Sheperd)) got things going with a triple to center field. Classmate Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) reached on an error and scored Ridenour. Garrity then stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher to put himself in scoring position for Derr. Derr bunted his way to first base and scored Garrity. Sophomore Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) continued the hitting for Frostburg with a single to put two on for Kroboth. With an RBI single to score Derr, Kroboth picked up his fourth RBI of the game. Junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown)) brought home the last two runs of the inning with a two-run single to score Kroboth and Boyd.

Senior Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./North Hagerstown) held Pitt-Greensburg to just two hits over the three middle innings. Frostburg collected two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits. Sutcliffe brought home Garrity on a fielder's choice and Boyd drove home Sutcliffe on a sacrifice.

Junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)) tripled down the right field line to start off the six-run fifth inning. Greene come on to score on a fly ball by Garrity that lead to a UPG throwing error. Sutcliffe doubled down the left field line to bring home Ridenour. Derr grounded out but brought home Anuszewski for the third run of the inning. Boyd reached on an error that allowed sophomore Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to score, who came on to pinch run for Sutcliffe. Kroboth doubled to left and scored Boyd for his fifth RBI of the game. Junior Lucas Streeter (Litchfield, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) singled to third base and scored junior Scott Wilson (Allison Park, Md./Hampton (Garrett)). At the end of five, FSU lead 17-2.

UPG scored three runs in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the seventh, but could not overcome FSU as Frostburg won the first game 17-6.

Beachy picked up the win for FSU tossing 5.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out six.

Frostburg State continued the hitting brigade in the second game of the doubleheader. Answering a Pitt-Greensburg three-run first, FSU scored three runs on four hits to tie the game at three. UPG put another two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the second to take the lead 5-3. Frostburg tied up the game again in the home half of the third with two runs on three hits. Heatwole led off with a homerun to left field. Greene followed with a double and advanced to third after Ridenour grounded out. Anunzsewski doubled to right center, allowing Greene to cross the plate and tie the game at 5-5.

Pitt-Greensburg led of its half of the fourth with a homerun to right center and took the lead back, 6-5. Frostburg State tied the game at six a piece in the bottom of the fifth when Garrity singled to score Greene.

Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna (Anne Arnudel CC)) came on to pitch in the fifth inning and threw 3.0 perfect innings. Greene reached first in the bottom of the seventh on a fielding error by the third baseman and came around to score the winning run on a fielding error by the first baseman. Frostburg State took the final game 7-6.

Quayle got the win for FSU throwing 3.0 innings, giving up no hits or walks and striking out six. Quayle now leads the Bobcats in strikeouts with 33.

Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday, April 10 when it travels to Buffalo, N.Y. face AMCC opponent Hilbert at 1:00 pm.
