Baseball Takes Two from AMCC Opponent Mt. Aloysius

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team used late inning heroics from sophomore Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to overtake Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mt. Aloysius and sweep its sixth conference doubleheader of the year as it defeated the Mounties 4-3 and 7-6.

The Bobcats (27-9, 15-3) scored early in the first game in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI-double from junior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett)) to score sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty). FSU added another run in the bottom of the third when senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Sheperd)) hit an RBI-double to center field to score junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)). FSU led 2-0 after three innings.

The Mounties' (16-21, 11-7) bats found life in the top of the fourth when they scored three runs to take a short-lived 3-2 lead over the Bobcats. Two of the three MTA runs came on a two-run single from Eli Traup to center field and the final run for the Mounties crossed the plate after Brett Daly walked with the bases loaded. Junior pitcher Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven (CCBC Essex)) caught Christian Rivera looking to strike out the side and end the Mounties scoring.

Frostburg State would not allow Mt. Aloysius to hold the lead for very long scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and take back the lead. Junior Rich Schuler (Wilmington, Del./Caravel Academy (Cecil)) led off the inning with a double to center field and scored on Carr's two-run homerun to right center. The Bobcats led 4-3 after four to take the game.

Ross picked up the win on the mound for the Bobcats tossing 7.0 innings, giving up three runs over five hits and two walks while striking out nine. Ross improved to 4-1 on the year.

MTA got on the scoreboard first in game two with two runs on three hits in the top of the first with a two-run single to center field. FSU tied the game at two in the bottom of the third. Senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) singled to right center followed by Greene doubling to left field to put runners in scoring position for Ridenour. Ridenour singled to left field to drive home Kroboth and Greene and tie the game at 2-2.

Mt. Aloysius added three more runs in the top of the fourth with a three-run homerun from Brett Daly to right field. Frostburg State answered with two runs of its own in the home half of the inning. Anunszewski led off with a solo homerun to right center to cut the MTA lead to 5-3. Senior Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) singled left and was put in scoring position on a single from Kroboth. On an attempt to pick off Kroboth from first, Derr was able to score on a throwing error by the Mounties pitcher. MTA lead 5-4 after four innings.

Matt Cornetti led off the MTA half of the fifth with a homerun to right center to score the last run for the Mounties and give them a 6-4 lead.

Junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown)) opened up the bottom of the seventh with a double to center field and was moved to third on a fly ball from Greene. Heatwole came around to score on a RBI single from Ridenour and cut the MTA lead to 6-5. Sophomore Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) came out to run for Ridenour. Senior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) doubled to left center to put runners on second and third. The Mounties intentionally walked Anuszewski to load the bases for Schuler. Schuler tied the game at six with an RBI-infield single to score Boyd and keep the bases loaded. Summerfelt came out to pinch hit for sophomore Daniel Jester (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson) who came out to pinch run for Carr in the sixth inning. Summerfelt singled to center field to score Garrity and win the game for the Bobcats 7-6.

Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna (Anne Arnudel CC)) got the win for the Bobcats pitching the final 2.0 innings of the game, giving up just two hits and striking out one. Quayle improved to 7-0 on the season.

The Bobcats take a break from conference play as the travel to Towson, Md. to host Salisbury on Wednesday, April 28 at 3:30 pm.
