Baseball Pounds 21 Hits in AMCC Sweep

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Frostburg State baseball swept its third Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Tuesday afternoon, shutting out Franciscan University in the first game, 5-0, and powering its way to a 13-3 win in the second game.

The Bobcats are now 8-2 in the AMCC and 20-8 overall on the season. With the pair of wins today, FSU extends its winning streak to seven games.

Senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) led off the first game getting hit by a pitch and was followed by a single from junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown)) to put runners on first and second, both runners were able to advance a base from a fielding error by the Barons’ leftfielder. Junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)) put the first run of the game on the board with a sac fly to left center to plate Kroboth. Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Sheperd)) walked to put two runners on. After a wild pitch to bring Heatwole to third, senior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) hit the second sac fly of the inning to allow Heatwole to cross the plate a give the Bobcats to 2-0 lead. FSU scored its last run of the inning with an RBI single from sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) to bring home Ridenour.

Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arundel)) kept the Barons (6-16, 3-9) off the base path, giving up only two hits in the first inning and not allowing another hit or walk over the next four innings. Quayle finished the day giving up four hits and no walks, while striking out 11, a team-season high.

FSU added two insurance runs, one in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the seventh, to seal the game for the Bobcats. Sophomore Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) singled and stole second. Kroboth put Boyd on third with a bunt single. Heatwole lined out to centerfield for the third sac fly of the game in the top of the fourth. Greene tacked on the last run of the game with solo homerun to leftfield. The Bobcats took the first game 5-0.

Once again, Kroboth led off the game getting hit to start the second game of the twin bill. Heatwole singled to left and the two converted a double steal to put runners on second and third. Greene followed getting hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ridenour walked to plate Kroboth for the first run of the game. Anuszewski hit a sac fly to right center for the fourth sac fly of the afternoon for the Bobcats and to score Heatwole and give FSU the 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.

The Barons scored their first runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the first on two hits and an error. FUS took the lead for the first and only time in the bottom the second on two hits and one error, 3-2.

The Bobcats quickly answered with four runs in the top of third to secure the game for FSU. Greene led off the inning with a single to left field and stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Ridenour walked to put runners on the corners and was able to advance to second on a passed ball that scored Greene to tie the game at three a piece. Anuszewski singled in Ridenour to take the lead back for the Bobcats for good, 4-3. Frostburg State added two more runs on a sac fly from senior Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick), the fifth of the doubleheader. Junior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md. / Northern Garrett (Garrett)) eventually came on to score from a fielding error after reaching on an infield single. The Bobcats led 6-3 after three.

FSU put up seven runs over the three middle innings, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and the final two runs in the sixth. Pitcher junior Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven (CCBC Essex)) pitched a 1-2-3 third, fourth and fifth inning and did not allow a Baron base runner until the sixth inning when they managed two hits but could not come up with a run. Ross finished the afternoon pitching 6.0 innings, giving up three runs, only one earned, on six hits, giving up no walks and fanning eight.

The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, April 17 when they host AMCC opponent D’Youville for their senior day with the first pitched scheduled at 1:00 pm.
