FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team handed Mary Washington its first loss of the season with a 13-8 victory Tuesday afternoon, as was the fourth time the Bobcats have scored at least 10 runs in a game this season.

UMW (6-1) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first manufacturing two runs on two hits. The Eagles led 2-0 going into the second inning.
The Bobcats (8-3) would not let the Eagles hold the lead for long, scoring two runs of their own in their half of the second. Senior
Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Sheperd)) led off the inning with a double to left field. Junior
Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett)) picked up his first walk of the game and classmate
Ben Oberman (Loganville, Ga./Loganville) got hit by a pitch to load the bases for junior
Rich Schuler (Wilmington, Del./Caravel Academy (Cecil)) who hit an RBI single to score Ridenour. Senior
Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) hit into a fielder’s choice to score Carr and tie the game at two each going into the home half of the second.
The Eagles took the lead once again in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Eric Rehbein. UMW held the 3-2 advantage until the fifth inning.
The FSU bats came alive in fifth to break open the game for the Bobcats. Derr led off the fifth with a single to left and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Senior
Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) singled to right and advanced on an error by the right fielder to allow Derr to score the tying run. Junior
Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown CC)) singled to right to score Derr and give the Bobcats a 4-3 lead. FSU added two more runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Mary Washington got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single to right field. The Eagles cut the Bobcat lead to 6-4.
The Bobcats tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to five runs, 9-4. After surrendering two singles and a walk, the Eagles’ pitcher walked Carr for the second time and walked in a run to score Heatwole. Oberman followed with a two-run single to right.
The Eagles tried to rally back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on two hits, but were unable to overtake the lead from the Bobcats.
For the second-straight inning, the Bobcats put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh. Junior
Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown CC)) hit a two-run double to left center to score Kroboth and Derr followed by a double from senior
Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) to score Greene.
Each team added another run in their respective half of the inning, and the Bobcats led 13-7 going into the bottom of the eighth. Junior righthander,
Britton Quayle (Serverna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arnudel CC)), who came out in relief of classmate
Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven (CCBC Essex)) in the bottom of the sixth, was able to shut down the Eagles in order.
Will Wright hit a solo homerun to right field in the bottom of the ninth to end scoring for both teams and bring the final score to 13-8.
Ross picked up the win for the Bobcats pitching 5.0 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and striking out two. Quayle finished the day with 4.0 strong innings out of the ‘pen, giving up two runs on three hits and two strike outs.
Schuler finished the day going 3-5 with two RBIs and one run score. Carr went 1-1 with two walks and three hit by pitches, picking one up RBI.
The Bobcats return to action as they kick off their spring break schedule on Monday, March 15 as they take on UW-Platteville at 12:00 pm in Fayetteville, N.C.
