Baseball Sweeps Day Two Against Old Westbury

DANVILLE, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team played 18 total innings of baseball Sunday afternoon to complete a double-header and series sweep of non-conference opponent, Old Westbury.

Junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown CC)) hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Bobcats (5-2) the 15-12 win in the first game of the twin bill.

Old Westbury (0-3) struck first putting up three runs in the top half of the first inning off a two-run single and a costly error by the Bobcats. The Panthers could not hang on to the 3-0 lead for very long, giving up three runs in the bottom of the third. Senior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) doubled down the left field line to score junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown CC)). Junior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett)) picked up his first hit of the game, a two-run single to centerfield to tie the score at 3-3.

The Bobcats put eight more runs on the board over the next three innings to push their lead over the Panthers to 11-6 going into the top of the eighth. Old Westbury was able to manfucture three runs on three hits and an error in the inning to narrow the game to 11-9. Frostburg State answered back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single off the bat of Garrity to score sophomore Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) who came out to run for senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Shephard)). The Bobcats led 12-9 after eight innings.

The Panthers were able to come back in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs to tie the game at 12 a piece and force extra innings.

Senior Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) came out to pitch the top of the 10th for the Bobcats and was able to throw three shutout innings, keeping FSU in the game.

Senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) was the first runner for the Bobcats in the bottom of the 12th, getting hit by a pitch, the fourth hit batter of the game for FSU. Heatwole singled to advance Kroboth to third and put him in scoring position. Greene homered to left center to score Heatwole and Kroboth and win the game for the Bobcats, 15-12.

Garrity went 3-4 with three RBIs and four runs, while junior Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) went 2-4 with six RBIs and one run. Beachy picked up the win for the Bobcats pitching 3.0 strong innings to close out the game.

Freshman Jordan Santak (New Castle, Del./Delcastle Technical) got the nod for Frostburg State in the second game. Santak pitched 5.0 solid innings for the win, giving up four hits and and no runs. The Bobcats used a four-run first inning to seal the win and sweep of Old Westbury. FSU added three insurance runs in the fourth to keep the lead, 7-0. The Panthers put their only two runs of the game on the board in top of the sixth on two hits and two errors.

The Bobcats tacked on two run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win for FSU, 9-2.

Heatwole finished the game a perfect 4-4 with three RBIs and three runs. Sutcliffe went 1-3 with two RBIs.

The Bobcats are back in action in Woodbridge, Va. on Saturday, March 6 as they start a three-game series against Allegheny, first game slotted for 3:00 pm.
