Baseball Loses to Roanoke 6-5

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Despite four runs over the final two innings, Frostburg State's rally came up short as it lost to Roanoke 6-5 in non-conference baseball action, Friday evening.

The Bobcats (1-1) out hit Roanoke 9-4, but the Maroons (2-3) capitalzed on four FSU errors in the contest. RC jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. Graham Thacker drove home one in the first with an RBI single to left and Roanoke plated two unearned runs in the third inning.

Frostburg crossed the plate in the top of the fourth when sophomore Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) scored on an fielding error by the leftfielder. However, Roanoke pushed its lead back to three (4-1) with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning. RC increased its edge to 5-1 with an unearned run in the sixth when Rus Shefte scored on an error by the Bobcat outfield.

The Bobcats came alive offensively in the top of the eighth with three runs. Junior Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) singled up the middle and Sapp drew a walk before junior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett) hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence as the Bobcats trailed 5-4.

Matt Herron had a two out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to push the Roanoke lead to two, 6-4. In the ninth, FSU senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Shepherd)) singled home junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown CC)) for the game's final run.

Freshman Jordan Santak (New Castle, Del./Delcastle Technical) endured the loss for the Bobcats after lasting 3.0 innings and allowing four runs. Cody Kidd picked up the victory for the Maroons after tossing 7.1 innings and allowing three runs.

Frostbrug State returns to the diamond today at 4:00 pm against Methodist.
