Coaching the Cats
The Bobcats are led by Tom Rogish in his third season as head coach in the program’s 49-year history. Last season, Rogish guided FSU to a 1-9 overall record against arguably the nation's toughest schedule. The Bobcats led the ACFC in interceptions (12) and turnover margin (+2) and finished second in red zone offense (81.8), pass offense (182.7) and pass efficiency (138.1).
Rogish brought over 30 years of coaching experience to Frostburg State including 29 years in the collegiate ranks. He spent the last 22 years at the Division II level at perennial powers Indiana (Pa.) and Shepherd (W.Va.).
Prior to his arrival in Frostburg, Rogish spent two years on the defensive staff at Shepherd College. The Rams made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007 including a run to the NCAA Division II Northeast Region championship this past fall.
New Additions
Frostburg State University head football coach Tom Rogish welcomes four new additions to the coaching staff for the fall 2010 season. Gabe Luvara joined the staff last April and will serve as the program's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Aaron Hirtzel, Andrew Rebello and Jamie Schumacher have joined the Bobcat staff as graduate assistants late in the summer prior to the start of preseason camp.
Luvara arrived at FSU from Ithaca College where her served as the offensive coordinator for the last three years. He helped the Bombers to a pair of NCAA Playoff appearances and a 24-8 overall record. Joining the Bobcat coaching staff reunites Luvara and coach Rogish, who were both previous members of the Indiana (Pa.) football program. Luvara was a four-year player and All-PSAC selection at IUP while Rogish served as the team's associate head coach (1994-2005).
Hirtzel will work with the FSU defensive line after serving as an assistant coach at Juniata College last year, also helping with the defensive line. The Eagle defense created 15 turnovers and 10 sacks on the season. Prior to JC, Hirtzel played four years on the offensive line for Grinnell College and earned Honorable Mention All-Midwest Conference honors as a senior in 2008. He graduated from Grinnell in May 2009 with a 3.0 GPA in economics.
Rebello, who will work with the Bobcat defensive backs, comes to FSU after a four-year playing career for the Merrimack College football team. A three-year letter winner, Rebello helped the Warriors to a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Championships (2006 & 2009) and a total of 25 wins over his four years. He finished third on the team with 66 tackles and second with three interceptions as a senior in 2009, while helping MC to a 7-3 record. He was a Dean’s List and Commissioner’s list student and graduated this past May with a degree in psychology and a 3.2 GPA.
Schumacher will direct the running backs in his first year with the Frostburg football program after coaching the same position at Thiel College in 2009-10. While with the Tomcats, he assisted with the weekly game plans, the special teams units and the strength and conditioning plans for the team. Thiel posted three wins on the season and the team rushed for a season-high 172 yards in a 20-10 win over Albion.
Schumacher played four years of college football at Marietta from 2005-08 prior to his stop at Thiel. He was a three-year letter winner at linebacker, garnering All-Academic Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Honorable Mention honors in 2008 and Scout Special Teams Player of the Year honors in 2005. Marietta posted 16 wins during his four years.

The Bobcats Last Week
Junior quarterback Josh Volpe (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and sophomore Anthony Young (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) turned in record-setting performances to help Frostburg State rally for a 25-21 victory over The Apprentice School in Atlantic Central Football Conference action, Saturday.
FSU (2-7, 1-1) amassed a season-high 386 yards in total offense and led Apprentice (2-7, 0-3) in first downs (19-10) and time of possession (32:54-27:06). The Bobcats trailed several times throughout the game and used a touchdown with 3:15 left in the fourth quarter to pull off the come-from-behind win.
Young finished with an FSU and ACFC record 248 receiving yards on 15 receptions. He hauled in three touchdowns, including a 26-yard game-winner in the final minutes of the fourth. His three touchdowns are an FSU record and are second all-time in league history.

Senior Anton Wade (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) ran for a team-high 62 yards and a touchdown in the third quarter that tied the contest at 19-19.
Trey Tillman threw for 120 yards and a touchdown in the loss for the Builders. Chris Virgin carried the ball 20 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns, all season-highs for the sophomore tailback.
Volpe and Young hooked up for a 25-yard touchdown in the first quarter that capped a three-play scoring drive as FSU led 7-0. On the ensuing drive, Apprentice covered 61 yards on seven plays and Tillman tossed a 24-yard touchdown to Bryan Cain as Apprentice tied the game.
The Builders added to their lead when Virgin scored on a seven-yard run that took advantage of an FSU interception at its own 27. Apprentice further increased its lead when it scored with just 57 seconds left in the half, a three-yard scoring run by Virgin.
Frostburg State answered just before the halftime horn. After returning a short kickoff to the 44, the Bobcats covered the final 56 yards in just 41 seconds and Young hauled in another 25-yard touchdown as FSU trailed 19-13 at the break.
The Bobcats tied the scored at 19 at 9:26 in the third quarter when they collected their longest drive of the afternoon. FSU covered 70 yards on just five plays, aided by a 49-yard pitch and catch from Volpe to Young, and Wade pushed his way into the end zone from a yard out.
However, Apprentice blocked the extra point and returned it the length of the field for two points and a sudden 21-19 lead.
In the fourth quarter, each team turned the ball over once and the FSU defense stopped Apprentice on fourth and 13 that setup the game-winning drive. Volpe completed five passes on the final scoring drive, including the 26-yard game winner to Young, who darted between Builder defenders and raced into the end zone.
The Bobcats advanced to the Apprentice three on the game's final drive but took a knee and ran out the clock for the win.
Senior defensive back Terryl Monroe (Temple Hills, Md./Dematha) made a career-best 14 stops with 3.0 tackles for loss and an interception.
Last Time Against The Sea Gulls ...
William Midgette ran for two fourth quarter touchdowns to seal a 34-19 Salisbury win over Frostburg State in the 11th Annual Regents Cup game, Saturday in Salisbury.
FSU finishes the season 1-9 overall and 1-2 in the ACFC while SU evened its record at 5-5 and 2-1 in the conference. It's the sixth-straight win for the Sea Gulls in the Regents Cup game and Salisbury now leads the all-time series 21-16.
Salisbury's Randal Smedley took home Mike McGlinchey Most Outstanding Player honors after running for a game-high 121 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Smedley's first touchdown with 3:02 to play in the second quarter gave the hosts the lead for good at 13-9. Senior defensive lineman Mike Iheakanwa (Lantham, Md./Duval) grabbed McGlinchey honors for the Bobcats after making six tackles and returning a fumble 61 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to trim a Salisbury lead to just one, 20-19.
Salisbury racked up 382 yards on the ground on 56 rushing attempts and totaled 425 yards in offense. The Sea Gulls entered the contest averaging 234 rushing yards a game and 328.9 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, FSU put up 224 yards of offense including 146 through the air.
The game started with a flurry of action as the first three drives of the contest resulted in points. The Bobcats took the opening kickoff and marched 67 yards on 15 plays for the first score of the game. FSU chewed up nearly nine minutes of the clock and freshman Zachary Beukers (Lusby, Md./Calvert) kicked a 20-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
Salisbury was quick to answer, scoring on its first possession. The Sea Gulls moved 61 yards on eight plays for a go-ahead touchdown as quarterback Sean Kelly ran in from 10 yards out for a 7-3 edge.
However, it was FSU's turn to answer on the game's third drive. The Bobcats again moved 67 yards for a touchdown, this time needing just seven plays and 3:04 for a 9-7 lead. Sophomore quarterback Josh Volpe (Germantown, Md./Northwest) connected with senior wideout Avery Willie (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), a former Salisbury transfer, for a 25-yard touchdown toss.
FSU held the 9-7 lead until Smedley's first touchdown with 3:02 to play in the opening half. The Sea Gulls capitalized on an FSU interception at the SU 48-yard line, moving 52 yards on seven plays, capped by a 17-yard touchdown from Smedley.
Willie gave Frostburg State great field position on the final drive of the first half with a 32-yard kickoff return to the SU 45. Seven plays later, Beukers kicked his second field goal of the game, a 24 yarder, as Salisbury held a slim 13-12 at halftime.
The two teams traded third quarter touchdowns as FSU trailed by just one point again, 20-19, heading into the fourth. Smedley found the endzone for the second time just 1:04 into the third quarter. He scored from 51 yards out, his second longest rush of the season, to extend the Sea Gull lead to 20-12.
After Frostburg State's ensuing drive stalled at its own 40, it was the Bobcat defense that came up with the big play and a score. SU maneuvered down to the Bobcat 35 and appeared ready to score again, but FSU sophomore Michael Ezeani (Glenn Dale, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) stripped Kelly of the football and Iheakanwa scooped it up and raced 61 yards for a touchdown to narrow the gap to 20-19.
However, Salisbury controlled the fourth quarter, holding the ball for 10 minutes and forcing two Bobcat interceptions. Midgette scored the first touchdown at 14:29 and later sealed the victory with a six-yard touchdown run with 2:24 to play.
Sophomore Travis Blair (Upper Marlboro, Md./Oxon Hill) posted a career-high 15 tackles while junior Terryl Monroe (Temple Hills, Md./Dematha) made 12 stops.
