SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna jumped out to a 11-2 lead and held on to the lead despite a late charge by the Frostburg State baseball team as the Crusaders took a 11-7 victory, Tuesday afternoon.
SU (16-9) built the large lead by racking up 15 of its 17 total hits in the first six innings off of three FSU (14-10) pitchers. The Bobcats found life against Crusader starter Calvin Hug in the seventh inning as freshman
Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) started the rally with an RBI double.
Senior
Andrew Sacks (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and junior
Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) got into the rally action each with RBI singles in the inning to cut the advantage to 11-5.
Sacks struck again in the seventh inning with a two-run single to bring the deficit to just four runs before Susquehanna brought in closer Ben Leonard who with the tying run at the plate but forced senior
Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) to ground out to third base. Leonard surrendered just one hit in the ninth inning to senior
Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) before getting back-to-back flyouts to right field to end the contest with the final score of 11-7.
Starter
Scott Eastment (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) suffered his first loss of the season as he threw 3.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits to drop his record to 2-1.
The bottom of the Bobcats lineup paced FSU at the plate as Sacks recorded a 2-for-4 afternoon with three RBI's and two runs scored, while Derr followed close behind at 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Summerfelt was clutch at the plate after coming on in the seventh inning as he went 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.
Frostburg State has moved its scheduled contest against AMCC opponent La Roche from Wednesday, April 8 to Thursday, April 9 due to the wintery weather sweeping through the region. The contest will still be played at Bob Wells Field at 1:00 pm.
