Baseball Sweeps Pitt-Greensburg to Close AMCC Play

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team concluded Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Pitt-Greensburg to finish conference play with a 15-3 record and seal the second seed for the conference tournament. The Bobcats took game one by a score of 9-6, while edging out the second contest 7-6.

In the first contest, UPG (16-16, 9-9) scored five runs on FSU (24-12,15-3) starter Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) in his 3.1 innings of action. Foshay allowed just two earned runs on three hits, while striking out two batters.

FSU countered the Pitt-Greensburg offense with single runs in each of the first three innings. Sophomore Spencer Madsen (Easton, Md./St. Michaels) came on in relief of Foshay in the fourth inning allowing UPG to expand its lead to 6-3 with a solo homerun by Shane Molyneaux.

Despite being down the Frostburg State offense stood behind Madsen and came alive in the bottom of the fourth as Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) closed the gap to 6-4 with a sacrafice fly to plate Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area). Kroboth had led the inning off with a single and a stolen base.

Senior Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) then struck against UPG reliever John Skeels with a three-run homerun that just hooked around the leftfield foul pole to give Frostburg State the 7-6 advantage.

FSU then expanded its advantage to three (9-6) in the fifth inning as freshman Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) and junior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) each drove in an RBI.

Pitt-Greensburg showed life in the seventh inning by bringing the game tying run to the plate three times, but FSU reliever David Lanier (Laurel, Md./Atholton) struck out one and forced two flyouts to earn the save and hold the score at 9-6.

Madsen earned his first victory of the season with 2.2 innings of work and surrendering just two hits. Clark excelled in his knew spot in the batting order with a 2-for-3 contest, while driving in three RBIs and scoring a run.

The second contest saw FSU take a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning behind a great performance from starter Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern).

UPG finally found life against Beachy in the fifth though and tagged him for three runs and take control of a 3-2 lead. Frostburg State did not wait long to tie the game as Kroboth drove home Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) for the tying run in the bottom half of the fifth. Derr has reached on a UPG error the batter before.

Beachy recorded two outs in the seventh with the score tied before giving way to left-handed reliever David O'Brien (Thurmont, Md./Mercersburg Academy) to face left-handed batter Chad Hoffner. Hoffner won the battle of the lefties with a three-run homerun off O'Brien to give Pitt-Greensburg the 6-3 advantage going into the final frame.

FSU refused to hand the game over as it pounded three single off UPG starter Branden Munshower to close the gap to 6-5. Pitt-Greensburg brought reliever Ben Sorosky in off the bench in an attempt to stop the Frostburg State run, but Kroboth hammered the first pitch he saw for a single and put the winning runs in scoring position.

Sapp came up big with the UPG infield drawn close to cut down the runner at home by driving a game winning single into left field just past a diving Matt Stanziano in order to seal the 7-6 win.

Despite throwing just one-third of an inning O'Brien took the victory to improve his record to 3-1. Garrity led in game two at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance and plating an RBI.

Frostburg State returns to action as it hosts No. 21 ranked Shenandoah on Wednesday, April 29 at 4:00 pm.
