LYNCHBURG, Va. – Kit Russell and Patty Sheahan each scored three goals and Lynchburg used an eight-goal second half to defeat visiting Frostburg State 12-6, Saturday at a rainy Shellenberger Field.
The Hornets (3-1) led 4-3 at the break but opened the second half with seven of the next eight goals for an 11-4 lead. FSU (2-3) scored three goals in the second half including two of the game’s final three but it was too late as time expired.
Junior
Elisabeth Hildebrand (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) and sophomore
Megan Dent-Carman (LaVale, Md./Mercersburg Academy) each netted two goals for the Bobcats in the loss. Freshmen
Rachel Frank (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and
Ali Kapustin (Columbia, Md./Marriots Ridge) also netted solo goals in the second half.
With LC up 4-3 at the beginning of the second, Sheahan scored two of the team’s first three goals at the hosts surged ahead 7-3.
Dent-Carman stopped the Lynchburg run with a goal at 18:44, but the Hornets then put the game out of reach with four straight over the next 9:00 minutes for an 11-4 lead.
Frank and Kapustin each scored with less than five minutes left and Lynchburg added a late goal for the final score of 12-6.
The Hornets scored their goals in pairs in the first half of play. FSU opened the scoring when Hildebrand found the net off an assist from junior
Ali Zinnel (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) in the 27th minute.
Lynchburg then netted back-to-back goals for a 2-1 lead. Hildebrand tied the game for Frostburg State at 11:49 when she scored for the second time in the opening half. Lynchburg again netted two-straight goals for a 4-2 edge. Dent-Carman ended the first half with a free position goal at 6:00.
LC keeper Kaelyn Sullivan made two saves in the first half while Christina Tran made four saves in the second. Senior
Erin Morrell (Easton, Md./Easton) faced 34 shots and made 11 saves in the loss for the Bobcats.
Frostburg State returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Guilford at 6:00 pm.
