FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior
Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) led the way for the Frostburg State baseball team in picking up its first victory of 2009, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats split a doubleheader matchup against SUNY Old Westbury winning 14-6 in the afternoon, while dropping the nightcap 7-1.
In game one, FSU (1-5) used six runs in the second inning followed by seven in the third to pull out to a large lead, while Foshay allowed only three hits in 5.1 innings of work to grab his first win of the season.
Sophomore
Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) paced the Bobcat’s big innings with a three-run homerun in the second followed by a two RBI single in the third. Sutcliffe finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with five RBI’s and two runs scored.
Junior
Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) also went 2-for-3 at the plate in the victory, while also scoring two runs.
The nightcap saw a different story from Frostburg State as Old Westbury (1-1) ace Robert Whitenack shut down the offensive firepower of FSU by scattering six hits over 6.0 innings. Whitenack allowed the lone Bobcat run to score in the first inning as Derr scored on three-straight passed balls after reaching on a single.
Senior
Andrew Sacks (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) led Frostburg State at the plate in game two with two doubles, while junior
Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) followed close behind as the only other Bobcat with two hits (2-for-3).
Freshman #Zach O’Dell# (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats as he surrendered six runs in 3.2 innings, yet only three of his runs were earned due to FSU errors.
Frostburg State looks to rebound tomorrow afternoon for the rubber match between the two teams slated to be played at 11:00 am at Stafford H.S. in Fredericksburg, Va.
