FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Despite a strong effort from junior starter Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) the Frostburg State baseball team fell 4-2 to Roanoke in the opening game of the 2009 season.
Foshay hurled six strong innings allowing five hits and an unearned run, while striking out six.
Senior Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) drew a walk to open the game and converted it into the first run of the season as junior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) drove him home on a single to leftfield. The Maroons (4-1) tacked on it first run in the fifth inning after a fielding error by sophomore Tim Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) to knot the game at one run apiece.
The Bobcats (0-1) retook the lead in the seventh inning as senior Mike Jester (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson) stole second base after being walked to start the inning and was eventually drove in by freshman Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy).
Roanoke tied the game in the eighth as Brad Greenway drove in Graham Thacker off of junior reliever Spenser Barnard (Bloomington, Md./Southern Garrett). The Maroons would benefit from another fielding error with two outs to tack on two additional runs in the inning to seal the 4-2 win.
Garrity led the way for the Bobcats as he went 2-for-4 on the morning and drove in his first RBI of the season.
In the second game of the day the Bobcats (0-2) fell 7-3 at the hands of Lynchburg (5-3) who collected 14 hits on four FSU pitchers.
Sophomore Benjamin Oberman (Loganville, Ga./Loganville) led the way in the defeat as he scored two runs, while driving in two himself. Oberman collected his first homerun of the season in the fifth inning to score the third and final fun for Frostburg State.
Freshman starter #Zach O’Dell# (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on 11 hits.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, February 21 at 2:00 pm to face Methodist.
