FROSTBURG, Md. — Thanks to four first-half goals, the Frostburg State men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a decisive 5-2 victory over Hood in the final game of the 2008 FSU Tournament, Sunday.
In the first game of the day, Eastern Mennonite (2-0) captured the tournament championship with a 4-0 shutout of La Roche (0-2).
FSU (1-1) had an efficient first half as it scored on four of its 10 shots. FSU also led in corner kicks in the opening period 5-1.
Senior Adam Gracia (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton) put the hosts on the board with his first score of the season off an assist from Jason King (Herndon, Va./Herndon) at the 15:53 mark. Hood (1-1) attempted just two shots in the opening half and scored on the first when Quinn Miller found the back of the net for his second goal in as many days to knot the contest at 1-1.
Gracia struck again six and a half minutes later, this time on a corner kick. Sophomore Andres Vega (Potomac, Md./Wootton) knocked in Gracia’s corner to give the Bobcats the lead for good at 2-1.
Vega returned the favor three minutes later, this time to junior Greg Bistany (Greenbelt, Md./St. John's College) who headed in Vega’s pass to push the lead to 3-1.
Junior Steven Jacobsen (Waldorf, Md./West Lake) ended the first half scoring when he fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net for a 4-1 lead with less than seven minutes to go.
The final two goals of the game came with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. At the 80:34 mark, freshman Robbie Wullschleger (Elton, Md. / Bohemia Manor) made a pass to sophomore Danny Hutchins (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) who netted a goal, giving the Bobcats a four-point advantage.
Kyle Hurt netted the second goal for the Blazers off an assist from Corey DeMaster to make the score 5-2 with less than eight minutes to play
The Bobcats held the edge in total shots 20-7 and led in corners 9-2. Hood goalie Shawn Fernholz had seven saves while FSU goalkeeper Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River) had two.
Eastern Mennonite vs. La Roche
In the tournament finals, Eastern Mennonite’s Junior Kamandua and Mitchell Leap each scored two goals to give the Royals a 4-0 victory over La Roche.
Eastern Mennonite outshot the Redhawks 9-6 in the first half and then 11-3 in the second.
At 20:08, Kamandua scored his first goal on LAR goalie Anthony Bishop. Just 18 minutes later, Leap netted his first goal of the game off an assist from Cory Parsons to finish the scoring in the first half. Under two minutes into the second half, Charles Metz IV shot a pass to Kamandua who scored for a 3-0 Royal advantage.
After a La Roche penalty in the box, Leap netted a goal off a penalty kick at the 82:04 mark to end the scoring of the game. EMU goalkeeper Maust Jackson had five saves in the win while LAR goalie Bishop had five saves.
