Women's Basketball Slips Past Catholic, 53-51

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State junior Brittany James (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) netted 12 points and was 6-of-6 from inside the paint during the second half as the Frostburg State women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Catholic University, 53-51, Tuesday afternoon in Bobcat Arena.

James led the Bobcats in scoring (13) and posted a game-high of 16 rebounds. Junior Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) also recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds and 10 points. Sophomore Mercedes White (Bowie, Md./Bowie) pulled down 10 rebounds while netting seven points.

FSU (2-2) led the Cardinals (4-2) early in the first half including two five-point advantages, one with 16:12 left (9-4) and the other with 10:27 remaining (14-9). CU rallied back to take the one-point lead over the Bobcats, 15-14, with 6:11 left in the half after a layup from Brianna Peterson off an assist from Christina Rogers.

With 2:13 remaining in the first half, the Bobcats fought back to tie the Cardinals at 19-19 when Wright netted a layup. After trading points with Catholic, FSU rallied to a one-point edge, 22-21, over CU going into the break after a jumper hit by White.

With Catholic leading early in the second half, Frostburg State went on a nine-point scoring run to post a seven-point advantage over the Cardinals with 14:46 remaining in play. During this run, James recorded four points, two rebounds and a steal while freshman Jinaki Boston (Baltimore, Md./South Side Academy) netted four points.

With 11:35 left in the half, Catholic cut the Frostburg State advantage to only one point, 33-32, after recording a six-point run. For over four minutes, the Bobcats dominated the game scoring seven consecutive points, 40-32, with three points coming from Wright.

Frostburg State posted two ten-point leads over the Cardinals twice within less than a minute between the two, one at 44-34 and the other at 46-36. The Cardinals rallied back to within three points of the Bobcats, 46-43, with 3:57 left in regulation after recording a seven-point run with four points coming from Emily Brauer.

FSU battled back to a five-point advantage over CU, 48-43, only to have this advantage cut to one point, 48-47, by the Cardinals with 1:56 left in play. The Bobcats were able to hold on to its lead until the final buzzer to give the end score of 53-51.

For the Cardinals, Peterson tallied 15 points and seven rebounds while Kate Robinson recorded nine points and six rebounds.

The Bobcats are back on the court at home against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg December 3, at 6:00 pm.
