FROSTBURG, Md. – The National Football League (NFL) draft came to an end earlier this evening and within minutes of its conclusion the San Francisco 49ers announced that they are signing Frostburg All-American defensive tackle Niles Scott to a free agent contract.
Scott will report to rookie training camp on May 4-6 and then again on May 11-13.
Scott capped his brilliant Frostburg career by being named to the AP Little All-America First Team and the D3football.com All-America Second Team following his senior season this past fall.
The D3football.com All-East Region Defensive Player of the Year, Scott also garnered First Team D3football.com All-East Region honors and was a First Team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) honoree.
Scott finished his final season with 51 total tackles, including 16.5 tackles for loss (104 yds.) and 10 sacks (77 yds.). He finished second in the NJAC in sacks per game (.77) and sixth in the league in tackles for loss per game (1.3).
Over his four-year career, he totaled 150 tackles, including 43 tackles for loss (245 yds.) and 25 sacks (185 yds.). He is third all-time in program history in sacks and tied for eighth in tackles for loss.
The Bobcats won a school record 11 games (11-2) and made just their second trip to the NCAA Playoffs, while advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time since the NCAA expanded the playoffs to 32 teams.
Frostburg, which knocked off both No. 9 Wittenberg (35-7) and No. 10 Washington & Jefferson (46-23) in the NCAA Playoffs, set the program record with 468 points scored and captured the Regents Cup trophy from in-state rival Salisbury for the second-straight year.
The 49ers are under the direction of Kyle Shanahan, who enters his second season at the helm in 2018. Last fall, San Francisco finished 6-10 overall, but closed the season with five-straight wins once Jimmy Garoppolo became the starter at quarterback. The 49ers open their 2018 campaign with a road game at Minnesota on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1:00 pm.
Scott is the first Frostburg football player to sign an NFL free agent contract since Kevin Culbert signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2006.
