Shane Brookshire enters his fifth year as the head coach of the Frostburg State men's and women's track & field and cross country teams in 2023-24.
The 2023 MEC Outdoor Championships saw more continued success for both the men's and women's track & field programs, with the former earning third and the latter placing fifth to both finish their highest in the MEC. FSU put together15 All-MEC honors, including conference championships for Omokemi Balogun in the Triple Jump and Marquise Burks in the Decathlon. Both also earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors, joined by Tom McCoy in the Pole Vault. The men's and women's programs both received the USTFCCCA All-Academic Award.Â
Frostburg had 13 All-MEC performances at the 2023 MEC Indoor Championships, including conference titles for Jonathan Jenkins and Omokemi Balogun in the triple jump. The men's team placed third, while the women finished fourth, both the highest conference places since joining Division II. Additionally, Balogun (Triple Jump), Marquise Burks (Heptathlon), Nathaniel Mesy (400 Meters), and Tom McCoy (Pole Vault) were each named USTFCCCA All-Region for placing top-five in their respective events in the Atlantic Region.
Both the men's and women's cross country programs finished seventh at the 2022 MEC Championships, with Justus LePrevost earning Second Team All-MEC honors for the men. Each team also qualified to compete in the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet for the first time since joining Division II. The USTFCCCAÂ granted both teams the All-Academic Team Award, as LePrevost was also named an individual All-Academic selection.Â
In the 2022 Outdoor Championships, FSU placed seven male athletes as All-MEC performers. For the women, Alexa Bradburn and Makayla Westry shone as All-MEC athletes, with the latter winning the hammer throw and setting a new program record in the process.Â
Seven male athletes received All-MEC honors at the 2022 MEC Indoor Championships, including Tom McCoy setting a new indoor pole vault school record. On the women's side, Makayla Westry and Alexa Bradburn placed second and third, respectively, in the hammer throw to both receive All-MEC selections.Â
At the Fall '21 MEC Cross Country meet, the men finished in sixth, while the women placed eighth. Justus LePrevost earned Second Team All-MEC for the men's program.Â
In the 2021 MEC Outdoor Championships, the men's program had five All-MEC performances, including individual wins for John Kerns, Michael Belcher, and Nicholas Richardson. On the women's side, Alyssa Mullery earned a pair of second-place finishes to take All-MEC honors.Â
During the Spring 2021 cross country season, the men's program finished fifth overall, as Braxton Miller took home First Team All-MEC honors to cap off his career. On the women's side, Hannah Muir earned the program's first All-MEC selection as she placed 19th overall.Â
In his first year, Brookshire led the Bobcat track & field and cross country squads to highly successful first seasons at the NCAA Division II level. Despite the spring outdoor season being cut short, the Bobcat track & field teams burst on the scene during the indoor season.

The men finished in fourth place at the MEC Indoor Championships and the women took home ninth, despite not having a returning athlete from the previous season. John Kerns was named the MEC Male Field Athlete of the Year after winning the weight throw (17.40m) and taking third in the shot put (15.13m). Mike Belcher, Jacob Rickards, Jaydon Morley, Nicholas Richardson and Clayton Washington each captured All-MEC awards, while Richardson set the 60-meter dash school record four times throughout the indoor season.

The Bobcat women were powered by Makayla Westry as she broke the school record in the weight throw at the MECs with a distance of 14.84 meters. Morgan Mathews took home ninth place of 13 competitors in the pentathlon with personal-best 2,432 points.

The men’s cross country team posted four top-10 finishes in six meets with third place at Hood and a fifth-place showing at the Mountain East Conference Championships. Braxton Clark finished in 20th place at the MECs and earned Second Team All-MEC honors.

From 2014-2019, Brookshire served as the head women's cross country and track coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Under his tutelage, the Bulldog programs grew tremendously in competition and in the classroom. Brookshire's cross country teams won three United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic awards, while his track & field teams captured the same honor in back-to-back years.

In terms of competition, 28 of Brookshire's student-athletes earned All-Conference awards and he helped four participants to Second Team All-Great American Conference honors.

In 2015, Brookshire received his USTFCCCA Endurance Specialist Certification, while in 2018, he added his USTFCCCA Throwing Events and Strength & Conditioning Specialist certification. Following his first year at FSU in the summer of 2020, Brookshire became a USTFCCCA Sprints/Hurdles/Relays Specialist.

Prior to his head coaching role, Brookshire was an assistant cross country coach at SWOSU and he also had assistant coaching roles at San Jose State University, Bemidji State University and Escalon High School.

As a student-athlete, Brookshire had a successful five-year career in cross country and track & field at California State University Stanislaus where he helped his cross country team to a second place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2007.

Brookshire graduated from Cal State, Stanislaus with his bachelor's degree in physical education in 2010 and he earned his master's degree in sports management from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2014.
