Rubin Stevenson enters his eighth season as head coach of the Frostburg State University football program and 14th overall as a member of the Bobcat coaching staff. Stevenson has led the Red and Black to a 29-40 overall record, a 13-17 mark in the Atlantic Central Football Conference, two ACFC championships (2002 and 2003) and a berth in the 2002 and 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southwest Championship Game.
Stevenson, who became the 11th head coach in the history of the program August 2, 2000, traditionally takes his Bobcats up against one of the toughest schedules in Division III.
Last season, the Bobcats finished with a 2-7 overall record and an 0-4 slate in the ACFC. At the conclusion of the season, FSU earned a forfeit win over SUNY Brockport after the Golden Eagles used an ineligible player for the first nine games of the regular season.
FSU landed 14 players on the All-ACFC team including first-team selections Lathon Romaine and Fred Howze. The pair was named to the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-South Region squad while Howze was honored by being selected to the ECAC All-Southwest Region Team.
In 2005, Frostburg State posted a 6-5 overall mark and a 1-4 ACFC slate including a berth in the ECAC Southwest Championship Game. The Bobcats led the ACFC in scoring defense holding opponents to a stingy 17.9 points per game. FSU finished second in the league in sacks (31) and fourth in total defense (315.5 ypg).
Nine Bobcats earned All-ACFC honors including defensive end Kevin Culbert who was voted as the ACFC Defensive Player of the Year. Culbert was also named the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-South Region Defensive Lineman of the Year as well as a being named to the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-American first team and D3football.com All-American second team. He also participated in the East Coast Bowl in Petersburg, Va. and the Aztec Bowl in Toluca, Mexico.
In his first five seasons at the helm of the program, Stevenson guided the Bobcats to a 21-28 overall record and a 12-8 conference mark. Frostburg State earned back-to-back ACFC Championships in 2002 and 2003 after the team posted perfect 3-0 records in the conference. In ‘02, FSU earned a berth in the ECAC Southwest Championship Game, falling to Johns Hopkins 24-21.
Seventy-one players earned All-ACFC honors during his first five years while garnering two conference Coach of the Year awards for himself. He also guided three players (Culbert, George O’Brien and Roy Olson) to All-American status. Olson was selected to two All-American teams (Hewlett Packard and American Football Coaches Association) in 2002 and one (College Sports Information Directors) in 2003.
Stevenson has also served as FSU's defensive coordinator since his arrival in 1992 and has consistently molded the Bobcat defense into one of the nation's top units.
In his first year with the program, the Bobcats finished ninth in the nation in pass efficiency and 17th in points allowed. His 1995 unit ranked fourth in the country in pass efficiency, and his 1996 squad finished second in pass efficiency, fourth in total defense and seventh in scoring defense.
In 1998, the Bobcats were ranked nationally in passing defense (21st), total defense (37th) and rushing defense (37th). His 1999 unit was 40th in the country in pass defense efficiency (94.8 rating), registering 18 interceptions and allowing just 12 touchdown passes in 11 games.
In 2000, the Bobcats ranked 13th in the nation in pass defense efficiency (82.8 rating), holding opponents to 44.8 percent passing and six touchdowns while recording 17 interceptions. The FSU defense allowed just 126.7 passing yards and 17.0 points per game.
FSU also led the ACFC in sacks three straight years, recording 28 in 2000, 26 in 2001 and 36 in 2002.
Stevenson handled numerous responsibilities during his tenure as an assistant. In addition to his role as defensive coordinator, he served as FSU's special teams coach from 1992 to 1999 and was named the assistant head coach in 1997.
He has also coached the secondary, defensive line and inside linebacker positions. His reputation as a top defensive mind earned him a coaching internship with the Washington Redskins for their 1999 training camp held at FSU.
Stevenson has also served as director of compliance for the FSU athletic department since 1994. His responsibilities include monitoring the academic status and eligibility of all student-athletes as well as interpreting NCAA rules and regulations.
Stevenson values not only producing quality players but also quality people.
"One of the things I am most proud of is helping students become productive citizens once they graduate. I believe in building character, and my goal is for each student-athlete to become a better person over the course of his college career."
Before arriving in Frostburg, Stevenson served as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University under Mike McGlinchey from 1987-1992 and earned his master's degree in educational administration and supervision from CCSU in May 1991.
Stevenson also played for McGlinchey at Salisbury, enjoying a standout career at linebacker and helping the Sea Gulls reach the 1986 NCAA Division III National Championship game.
Stevenson, who earned his bachelor's degree in social work from Salisbury in 1987, is married to the former Patti Spencer. The two are proud parents of twins Faith and Grace, born May 7, 2004.
