HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team collected its second win of their season-opening road trip with a 6-1 victory over Coker.
The Cobras had the first chance of the game just over two minutes in, with Skylar Ponik's shot being blocked before the Bobcats put the pressure on. Sophomore Makenna Buffington drew a save from Zahira Ferreyra but a minute later, FSU was awarded a penalty stroke, which junior Taylor Korczynski put home for the early 1-0 lead. Frostburg continued to keep possession in their offensive half, with their next chance coming inside the final five minutes, where freshman Izzy Gibbons saved the ball from going out and found senior Emma Price to get her first goal of the year and double the advantage. Going into the last few seconds of the period, sophomore Ava Shorkey gathered a pass at the top of the arc, spinning her way to a shooting chance and just finding the inside of the left post to put the score at 3-0 after one.
Coker again had the first opportunity in the second frame, earning a penalty corner within the first minute but only had a shot that was blocked. From that point, FSU controlled much of the play, as senior Mikyla Rineer put an effort wide while classmate Morgan Sparks drew a save from new goaltender Kylie Campbell. After a pair of corners resulted in just one shot going wide and with time ticking down, freshman Maddy Gummeringer fed a pass through to Shorkey, who passed across goal to senior Avery Hayden to tap home and head into the half with a 4-0 lead.
Frostburg came out of the break hungry for more, as sophomore Carline Earnshaw and senior Bri Macchia drew saves from Campbell while Rineer fired wide all in the first six minutes. Keeping up the pressure, Shorkey and Macchia were each denied before a penalty corner was awarded, as freshman Alayna Enoff received the insert and had a shot which deflected in off Earnshaw to make things 5-0.
Campbell shut down Rineer on the first opportunity for either side in the fourth quarter after five minutes. Neither side generated much until the final five, as Hayden saw a shot blocked before Gibbons reacted first off a pair of deflections, finding the back of the cage for FSU's sixth of the day. The Cobras added a late goal with essentially the last touch of the game to make the final score 6-1.
The Bobcats held a wide advantage with 17 shots to the hosts' three, with 13 of those on goal and also earning nine corners.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 2-1 on the year while Coker drops to 0-1. The Bobcats return to play when they host Lander on Friday, September 11 at 3 PM for their home opener. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com.
