FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team remained unbeaten with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against No. 17 Davis & Elkins on Sunday afternoon.
 
D&E showed why they were a nationally-ranked side in the first 10 minutes, controlling the majority of possession and creating a couple chances. Johana Magana shot just wide of the mark while Hugo Fauli tried his luck but put his effort right at graduate Josiah Emerson. The Bobcats were able to work their way into the game, earning a corner kick from which sophomore Nate Kennedy hit a shot over the bar. Kennedy popped up again 10 minutes later, meeting a cross from a free kick but heading over top the goal.
 
Neither side managed much else until just over 15 minutes to go in the half, when the Senators earned a corner and found the head of Dino Andreozzi, who saw the ball drift wide of the net. At the other end, sophomore Frank Stare collected a long pass and dribbled into the box, where he slipped between a pair of defenders and was brought down for a penalty kick. He would be the one to step up to the spot, sending keeper Charlie Philips the wrong way for a 1-0 score. Both teams had an off target effort in the final five minutes, with FSU leading at the break.
 
Davis & Elkins had a spark to begin the second half, getting a flurry of chances in the opening 15 minutes. Andreozzi had another header go wide while Lautaro Fernandez and Francisco Lopez Kreik also missed the target with efforts but continuing to press Frostburg's defense. The Bobcat stand finally broke a few minutes later, as Magana ran in behind and looked certain to score if not for the onrushing Emerson, however the save fell right to Fernandez to pass into an empty net for the equalizer.
 
Searching for more, Fauli hit a shot wide while the FSU defenders threw their bodies at efforts from Kreik and Sergio Martinez Laborda. In the final quarter to play, the Bobcats managed to work their way up the field and earn a free kick deep in Senator territory. Sophomore Christ Fopossi curled a ball in that met his leaping classmate David Williams, though his header cannoned off the bar and out to safety.
 
D&E resumed control from that point, as Emerson made an easy save on a shot from Magana. On the cusp of five minutes remaining, Otoniel Umana Alvarez cut in from the right side and forced Emerson into a save, as the rebound fell to Magana, whose effort was cleared off the line smartly by sophomore Spencer Davis, however a sliding challenge from junior Jesse Boamah was called for a penalty. Magana stepped up looking for the go-ahead goal, but Emerson dove to his right and stopped the shot, holding onto the ball and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Still scrambling to take the win, the Senators had two more efforts go on target but neither gave the Bobcat netminder much trouble, securing the 1-1 draw.
 
Davis & Elkins held an 18-5 advantage in shots, including a 14-1 margin in the second half, as Emerson made a career-high eight saves in goal.
 
With the draw, Frostburg moves to 2-0-2 on the year, while D&E now stands at 1-0-1. FSU will hit the road next on Wednesday, September 9 to face Wheeling at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
