Second Half Comeback Comes Up Short in Men's Soccer Loss to Concord

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team was unable to complete a second half comeback in their 2-1 road loss to Concord on Wednesday afternoon.

Within the first five minutes, CU had the ball in the back of the net, as a free kick swung in from the left side found the head of Josiah Ochoa, who was able to get the ball over the line past a pair of Bobcat defenders. Just a couple minutes later, Stephane Shongo nearly doubled the advantage, as his flicked header on a long throw was well-saved by freshman Julian Quirk in goal.

The Mountain Lions' defense held FSU's attack at bay for the most part while continuing to threaten Quirk's goal, as he had to dive to his right to save a deflected shot that swiftly changed directions. Frostburg finally got their first opportunity after 25 minutes, as senior Brian Gomez found sophomore David Williams at the top left corner of the box, however his effort went high over the bar. A minute later, Williams showed some good hold-up play to find sophomore Frank Stare, whose effort from distance was too close to keeper Iori Tanaka.

With 10 minutes to go in the half, Adam Leibowitz was played in behind on a counterattack, beating two Bobcat defenders before getting his shot just past Quirk for a 2-0 Concord lead. Shongo then looked to score again, going on a one-man run into Frostburg territory but shooting too close to Quirk and ending the half with a two-goal advantage.

FSU came out of the break with renewed energy, as an early throw led to a chance with the ball being headed around in the box, nearly finding sophomore Spencer Davis at the back post before Tanaka was able to gather. 12 minutes later, Davis launched a long throw into the box that was flicked on by graduate Kevin Garcia-Torres to sophomore Nate Kennedy, heading into the back of the net to pull within a goal.

Keeping up the pressure, freshman Abdallah Soulemana rose highest to meet a corner kick, sending a header towards goal but seeing it tipped over the bar by Tanaka. Chances were hard to come by for the next 20 minutes, as a free kick gave Soulemana another effort that went high, while CU put one wide of the goal.

The Bobcats pressed late on, however the Mountain Lions were equal to nearly every shot, making blocks on sophomores Christ Fopossi and Inzaghi Harmon. With 90 seconds to play, Harmon found a bit of space at the top of the 18 but blazed his shot wide, as CU held on for the 2-1 win.

FSU led the shot count 12-8, though the hosts put five on target to the Bobcats' four.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 5-2-3, while Concord improves to 7-1-2. The Bobcats will return home on Sunday, October 4 to host West Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
