Paige's Stunner, Rebuck's Second Half Strike Give WSOC Home Win Over Senators

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team opened their Mountain East Conference slate with a 2-1 home win over Davis & Elkins on Thursday evening.

The sides began the game evenly matched, with neither registering a shot until eight and a half minutes in, with FSU the first to strike. Off a throw-in, junior Rayiah Davis fed the ball through to classmate Cassidy Paige, who took a couple touches before firing a volley from 25 yards out into the top left of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Just 90 seconds later, however, Sophia Brown swung a corner in for the visitors that was met by the head of Anne-Sofie Kaiser for an immediate equalizer.

Frostburg created more chances over the next 15 minutes, as senior Madison Hinto sent a free kick over the bar while freshman Mia Hudson had a pair of efforts go high and wide in search of regaining the lead. D&E then had a period of possession in which one shot went just over the crossbar while another was chipped towards the back post, where junior Kayla Doty made a nice retreating save to palm the ball out for a corner.

Hudson continued to keep her shooting boots on, sending another pair of shots off target, one on a volley and the next a header off a corner. Doty was called into action again in the final five minutes, grabbing a shot directly at her, while the same was done at the other end by Luisa Camara against junior Elena Fernandez, taking things into the half at 1-1.

The Bobcats came out much quicker in the second half, regularly looking to get in behind the Senator defense. Their pressing paid off in the first five minutes, as Hinton found junior Madison Hobson on the right wing and sent a low cross in that was directed towards goal by classmate Mollie Rebuck, hitting off the post and in to reestablish the one-goal advantage. Hinton tried to double the lead with a shot from distance but put her effort right at Camara.

FSU's defense did well to limit Davis & Elkins' chances, as for the next 20 minutes their only opportunity came on a shot that was blocked before ever coming close to the goal. The sides then traded off target efforts, taking the game into the final 15 minutes. Camara was forced into four saves over a six-minute stretch, with sophomore Abbey Robrecht hitting two shots at the netminder while Fernandez and sophomore Reese Rizzo each also had efforts right at her.

D&E earned a corner with just over seven left on the clock but couldn't get a telling touch on it, as Rebuck had a late effort go right at backup keeper Gabriela Acevedo. The Bobcats were able to wind down the clock without the Senators generating much of anything to seal the 2-1 win.

Frostbug held a 16-6 advantage in shots, with nine on target to Davis & Elkins' three, all of the visitors' coming in the first half.

With the win, FSU improves to 2-0 on the year, while D&E drops to 1-1-1. The Bobcats will hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday, September 5 to play Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
