WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team netted a trio of goals in five minutes during the second half of their 3-0 shutout road win over Wheeling on Wednesday afternoon.
 
FSU came out with a flurry of chances, as in the first seven minutes, senior Madison Hinton hit a pair of efforts either side of the goal, then junior Cassidy Paige was played through by classmate Ainsley Wilson and did well to round keeper Madison Reis-Elbara, however her shot came off the outside of the post. Junior Mollie Rebuck and senior Chelsea Pettyjohn then both missed the target as the Bobcats enjoyed the majority of possession.
 
Paige provided another run down the right wing, cutting inside on her left foot but firing right at Reis-Eibara, who then gathered a deflected shot from junior Rayiah Davis. Headed to the final 15 minutes of the half, freshman Mia Hudson had a pair of chances, the first she hit wide of goal and the next well saved by Reis-Elbara, diving to her right to parry the effort out.
 
With time running down in the half, Hinton shot over the bar while sophomore Reese Rizzo started a surging counterattack on an end-to-end run, eventually passing wide to freshman Kelly Dougherty, who pulled her effort off target. Junior Elena Fernandez had one final chance to take the lead going to the break but her volley was right at Reis-Elbara to keep things scoreless.
 
Frostburg resumed their control at the start of the second period, as Wilson and Paige fired shots that were gathered by Reis-Elbara, while junior Ana Davis and the latter had shots off frame. After 10 minutes, FSU finally got their breakthrough, as Fernandez made a run down the left wing and played a ball in that was collected by Paige, who calmly found Rayiah Davis for a left-footed finish and a 1-0 lead.
 
The score seemed to be a spark for the Bobcats, as they added two more in a five-minute span. A Cardinal giveaway allowed Paige to turn into midfield, where she spotted sophomore Emma Hostetler making a darting run past WU's defense, threading a perfect ball for her to run onto and hit inside the near post. With some more chaos at the back, a deflected pass landed between Rebuck and two defenders, as the ball bounced into the path of Paige, who easily finished her one-on-one chance for a 3-0 score.
 
A minute later, Rayiah Davis tried to add a fourth but her effort from distance was too close to Reis-Elbara. Despite regularly making runs into Cardinal territory, the Bobcats struggled to create many chances over the next 20 minutes, while the hosts had their first efforts of the contest all go wide left. In the final six minutes, sophomore Allie Robrecht and Hudson had shots go wide while Fernandez had a late header grabbed by Reis-Elbara as the final shot.
 
With the win, Frostburg improves to 3-1 on the year, while Wheeling drops to 0-3. The Bobcats will remain on the road as they travel to No. 16 Fairmont State on Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
