FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team pushed their win streak to eight in a row with a pair of wins over Pitt-Johnstown at scores of 5-4 and 5-3 on Wednesday.
Senior Ally Myers would get her first start of the year for FSU and immediately ran into some trouble after back-to-back singles to lead things off. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, as each came around to score on an RBI single up the middle for UPJ to take a 2-0 lead. Myers settled in and got back-to-back fly balls to center to end the threat and keep the damage at two. The Bobcats tried to muster some two-out magic in the bottom of the first, with junior Kylee Piconi driving a single to center and sophomore Izabella Donaldson drawing a walk, but a running catch in right-center brought the frame to an end.
In the second, Myers got a pair of swinging strikeouts, then after the offense went quiet, had to work out of a jam in the third. The Mountain Cats led off with a double followed by a walk, as Myers got a much-needed infield fly to second base. An error at short then loaded the bases, but freshman Mackenzie Monahan redeemed herself by nabbing a liner and stepping on second for an inning-ending double play. FSU left another pair of runners on base in their at-bats, with senior Arden Miller and Piconi lining back-to-back singles before two straight groundouts kept them at bay.
Piconi fielded a trio of groundballs to put Pitt-Johnstown down in the third, as in the bottom half, sophomore Zoey Marinello, Monahan, and senior Gracie Nelson each worked singles to bring the bags full, with a fly out keeping Frostburg off the board. Junior Maddie Smith came on for her first home appearance of the season on the mound in the fifth, as the only traffic she allowed through two innings were a walk and a single, keeping UPJ's bats in check.
In the bottom of the sixth, FSU finally was able to get a run across, as Myers would get on base through an error to lead off the frame. Following a grounder from Marinello to move Myers up, senior Olivia Stetler would have a pinch-hit single to score her from second and cut the deficit to 2-1. With Myers coming back into the circle, the Mountain Cats welcomed her with three consecutive singles to plate a run. Piconi made a great catch on a lined shot to third to double up a runner at second, but a passed ball brought in another score to put the visitors' lead at 4-1.
Down to their final at-bats, the Bocats were determined to stay alive, starting with an error and back-to-back hits from Donaldson and sophomore Bri Russo to get one run back and start the rally. Myers then had a sacrifice fly get FSU within one, as Marinello followed with a walk and Stetler ripped one through the left side to load the bases. As the would-be final out, Monahan battled her way through the count, fouling off pitch after pitch to stay alive before hitting a ball to third that looked as if it would end the game, however it was booted in the infield, allowing Russo and freshman pinch runner Ryann Durnall to sprint home and stun Pitt-Johnstown with a 5-4 victory.
Myers picked up her second win of the season with five innings pitched, while Smith allowed just one hit and a walk through her pair of frames.
The game two start went to freshman Sammy Magee, as she would get three quick groundouts to work a clean first inning. Nelson reached on an error to start FSU's at-bats and stole second, but would get held up following a pair of strikeouts and a liner to right. Through the next inning and half, the only offense would come from UPJ getting an infield single and fielder's choice, with Magee ensuring neither crossed the plate. Finding a way on again, Nelson drew a walk in the bottom of the third, as Miller would then hit a triple the other to right to score the former and get the Bobcats on the board. Piconi would have an extra base hit of her own, driving a ball over the center fielder's head to knock in another run, going up 2-0.
With a quick response, the Mountain Cats would lead off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to cut the deficit in half. After Frostburg went down quietly, Pitt-Johnstown would tie the game in the top of the fifth inning, using a lead-off walk and sac bunt to put a runner in scoring position, coming home on an RBI single to right for a 2-2 tie. The even score wouldn't last long, FSU responded in the bottom half of the inning. Nelson would draw another walk to get on base, then Miller would hit a no-doubt shot over top of the scoreboard in left field to retake the lead. Piconi and Myers would then lace back-to-back doubles to push the lead to 5-2 and give Magee some cushion.
UPJ again limited the momentum, lining a homer to get within 5-3, however they weren't able to capitalize on a one-out single, with Magee working a swinging strikeout and a line out to left. With the Bobcats going down in order in the bottom half, freshman Izzy Dietrich would come on in hopes of closing out the seventh. She got a soft grounder to Piconi to start things out, then Nelson caught a lazy fly in center, as Dietrich ended things by fielding her position, snagging a comebacker and picking up the save for the 5-3 win.
Piconi led the Bobcats with four hits on the day while Miller had two extra base hits and three RBI.
With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 24-4 on the year, while UPJ drops to 10-15. FSU returns to Bobcat Field on Saturday, April 11 when they host Point Park for doubleheader starting at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
