Vulcan Errors, Bouma's Go-Ahead Homer Give Baseball Road Victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. The Frostburg State Baseball team won their road midweek game against California (Pa.) 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Tanner Cunningham led off the game with a walk before junior Jackson Schalick followed with one of his own after a strikeout, however the Vulcans got out of the jam with two straight grounders. In the bottom half, FSU sent out sophomore Hunter Layhew to toe the rubber and ran into some early traffic, hitting the first batter and giving up a single to the second. He was able to work a swinging K and a fielder's choice before another hit by pitch loaded the bases, as he got the next batter to look at strike three to get out of the inning unscathed.

The second went by scoreless for both offenses before Frostburg would break through into the score column in the third. Cunningham got things started with another base on balls before sophomore Manny Hall reached on a fielder's choice, as Cunningham was able to make his way to third on an error. With runners on the corners, a groundball from Schalick drove in Cunningham while Hall was out at second, then Schalick stole second before advancing to third as Jake Holler reached via another error. A sac bunt from freshman Drew Jourdan drove in Schalick, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Layhew found himself in some more trouble, as he surrendered a lead-off double before plunking back-to-back batters, but his defense would help limit the damage. Sophomore Zane Bohn snagged a hot shot at first and fired home for the first out, then sac fly gave CalU a run before he got the last batter to ground out, keeping the lead at 2-1. Neither side generated much offense in the fourth despite redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael reaching base from an error and making his way to third, as Layhew set down the Vulcans batters 1-2-3. FSU threatened again in the fifth, as Schalick and Jourdan both drew walks, but a flyout kept the score right where it was. In the bottom half, Layhew worked easily through CalU's batters with the help of a caught stealing from freshman Mason Kelleher.

After a quiet half from Frostburg, the Vulcans were able to take advantage of their runners on base, working a pair of singles to lead off followed by another up the middle to tie things at 2-2. Following a fielder's choice, junior Branden Brown came out of the bullpen and got the last out via a pop up in foul territory. The tie wouldn't hold long, as in the seventh, junior Ryan Bouma came in to pinch hit and on the first pitch he saw, launched a homer over the left field wall for a go ahead home run to give the Bobcats back the lead with a 3-2 score.

The eighth inning went by without much action from either side, as junior Joey Serafin came on in relief and worked easily through the Vulcan batters, getting a grounder and a pair of strikeouts to end the frame. FSU looked to add some insurance runs in the ninth, with Schalick and Jourdan each recording a single, but CalU kept them from scoring with another flyball. Entrusted to get the last three outs, Serafin came back out on the mound, getting the hosts to ground out twice before the last batter lined one to Schalick in left to finalize the 3-2 victory.

Bouma, Schalick, and Jourdan all recorded a hit on the afternoon, each paired with an RBI. Layhew went 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits, while striking out five, as Brown earned the win, throwing 1.1 innings, surrendering only two hits. Serafin got his seventh save of the year, as he went two innings allowing zero baserunners.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 30-16 as CalU drops to 25-19. The Bobcats are back on the road as they head to Mylan Park in Morgantown, WV to face Fairmont State with the first game starting at 12 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
