Fairmont Uses Late Offense to Defeat Softball in Doubleheader

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team fell at home to Fairmont State in mid-week doubleheader, losing 7-5 in extra innings and 16-6 in game two.
Frostburg would start sophomore Izabella Donaldson in the circle for game one, give up one hit and a walk in the opening frame but avoiding any damage on the scoreboard with an inning-ending strikeout. The Bobcats would get on the board first with senior Gracie Nelson getting an infield single while sophomore Bri Russo launched a double into the gap in right-center. Nelson scored on a passed ball, then junior Kylee Piconi laid down a perfect bunt to plate Russo and give Frostburg an early 2-0 lead.

Donaldson went perfect through the next three frames, striking out six more batters in the process in keeping the Falcons off the board. Frostburg threatened in the bottom of the fourth, as senior Ally Myers led off with a double while sophomore Sage Haller ran out an infield single, with the runners moving up on a sac bunt from sophomore Zoey Marinello. Neither was able to come across, however, as a sharp grounder to third and a strikeout ended the inning.

With Donaldson continuing to deal on the mound, Russo added some insurance, hitting a solo home run to right center and making it 3-0 Frostburg. In the sixth, Fairmont would get their first baserunner since the opening inning with a pair of singles either side of a walk to load the bases. Marinello helped her classmate out of the jam by grabbing a liner and firing to first to double up the runner and get out of the frame. Frostburg couldn't add on, giving the Falcons their last at-bats in the seventh. The first batter was walked while the next reached on an error, as the third tied the game with a shot over the fence in left-center for a 3-3 tie, as freshman Izzy Dietrich closed out the inning.

As the Bobcats didn't manage anything in the bottom half, the game entered extra innings. Dietrich worked around a lead-off single with a pair of grounders either side of a swinging strikeout. Frostburg would threaten in their chance at the plate, as Myers poked a ball the other way while Marinello drew a walk and freshman Sammy Magee reached on an infield single. With the bases loaded, a strikeout ended the threat and kept the game moving into the ninth. Once again, Dietrich worked out of trouble after back-to-back two-out knocks, as senior Gracie Nelson made a catch in center to close out the frame. In similar fashion, Frostburg had singles from senior Olivia Stetler and Piconi but struck out to keep the game moving.

With a runner being placed on second to start the tenth, Fairmont would break the tie, as a pair of singles and fielder's choice gave way to another three-run home run. After a pair of errors, the vistors then added one more run to go up 7-3. The Bobcats would get one run back on a single to left from sophomore Sage Haller, as despite a Marinello walk and Magee single to right, the only other run would come when Russo would make it 7-5 with a sacrifice fly to center, as the game ended on a pop up to second.

The Falcons would carry the extra inning victory into game two, jumping out in front early on five hits in scoring four in the first. Frostburg managed just one hit through the first two innings, as Fairmont would add a run in the third and then three in the fourth to go up 8-0. The Bobcats would come to life in the bottom of the frame, as Myers walked to lead things off then Donaldson put a power swing into a ball over the fence. Piconi followed with a walk as an error and two hit-by-pitches either side of a Russo walk brought in another run for an 8-3 score.

After a scoreless fifth, the Falcons brought their offense back in the sixth, using a walk, two doubles, and a two-run shot to go up 12-3. The Bobcats continued to stay alive in the bottom half, as freshman Mackenzie Monahan drew a walk while senior Gracie Nelson singled the other way, allowing the former to score on a sac fly from graduate Laura Gilford. Miller legged out an infield hit then Myers, Donaldson, and Piconi drew consecutive walks to plate a pair of runs and load the bases, however the rally came to a close on a liner to left as the score stood at 12-6. Fairmont then used a walk and four consecutive hits to net some insurance runs at 16-6 in the seventh. Despite one-out walks from Nelson and freshman Ryann Durnall, the Bobcats ended the game on a fly out and groundout to drop the series.

With the losses, Frostburg moves to 32-8 on the year while Fairmont improves to 29-9. The Bobcats hit the road for the weekend with a doubleheader against Wheeling beginning Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
