Crimson Hawks Use Early Offense to Defeat Baseball

FROSTBURG, Md.The Frostburg State University Baseball team fell 12-6 against Indiana (Pa.) at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Things started rocky instantly for FSU, as a walk and back-to-back hits put two runners across for the Crimson Hawks. After another single put runners on the corners, a wild pitch brought in another, and a hit to right scored the fourth run, bringing up a pitching change. IUP kept their offense going, as next two batters walked before a single moved everyone up a base, bringing across a fifth run. The Crimson Hawks capped off their strong first frame on a sac fly, going up 6-0 early.

After the Bobcats went quietly in the bottom half, junior Ben Berger came out of the bullpen in the second and got into some early trouble with a double and walk before getting a much-needed pop out to third. He then was able to prevent a double steal from paying off, with a throw out at home on a pick-off and fly ball to right keeping IUP from adding any more runs. In the bottom of the second, the Bobcats looked to respond as senior Jake Holler reached on an error before getting out on the bases via a fielder's choice while freshman Anthony Savino drew a walk, but FSU was not able to push any runs across.

The Crimson Hawks brought in another couple tallies in the third, leading off with a walk and coming all the way into score on a failed pick-off attempt. They followed with a walk, wild pitch, and balk to put the score at 8-0. Freshman Zane Bohn came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the frame, earning Frostburg's first hit as he gapped a ball to the left-center gap for a triple and came in on a junior Ryan Bouma single that he lined right off the pitcher's leg, making the game 8-1.

Three straight one-out singles put in the Crimson Hawks' ninth of the day in the fourth, as Frostburg left two runners on during their trip to the plate. With FSU finally able to keep IUP off the board in the fifth, the offense put together their best performance of the day so far in bottom half. Freshman Tanner Cunningham led off with a single and made his way to third in between a Bouma walk, which allowed the former to score on a Holler single to left. After a pitching change, freshman Will Mollman came in to pinch hit and reached base via an error, loading the bases before classmate Landon Marple singled to left, as a misplay from the left fielder allowed the ball to reach the wall and all three runners scored to make it a 9-5 game.

The sixth inning was the first 1-2-3 frame of the game, as both sides went without a baserunner. Frostburg's defense stepped up in the seventh, as after a lead-off single, the runner was thrown out trying to steal, then following another knock, Holler made a great catch in right, doubling the runner up to close things out. Holler then worked a two-out double in hopes of getting FSU closer but a swinging strike put an end to the threat. In the eighth inning, the Crimson Hawks' offense broke through again with a two-run homer, a walk, and an RBI single to put their advantage at 12-5. Frostburg was able to bring another run in the bottom of the frame, as Marple led off with a double before advancing to third on a grounder, then came into score when Savino reached base via an error, bringing the score to 12-6. With IUP going down fairly quietly in the ninth, FSU tried to get some late magic with Holler and Marple working a pair of singles, but neither were able to score for the six-run loss.

Holler and Marple led FSU's offense with three hits apiece, recording three RBI between the pair.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 26-10 as IUP improves to 21-15. The Bobcats are back on the road as they face Point Park for a four-game series starting on Saturday, April 18, at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
