Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Boss, Amos Drive Defense in Women's Lacrosse Upset of #18 Griffins

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team made history on Thursday afternoon, defeating their first-ever Division II ranked opponent in an 8-7 victory over No. 18 Seton Hill.

FSU began the game with freshman Delaney Burrows winning the opening draw, as senior Neila Haney put a shot wide before freshman Maddie Russell put home the first score of the contest after 90 seconds. SHU quickly got themselves together, as their defense didn't allow another shot for over eight minutes while forcing five turnovers. Sophomore Liz Amos kept Frostburg in the game, making a trio of saves while also picking up a caused turnover, however the Griffins' pressure finally paid off with a pair of goals 30 seconds apart with just over six minutes left in the quarter.

On the next draw, senior Daniella Boss was able to scoop up the loose ball, eventually leading to Burrows finding senior Emily Lamoreaux to tie things at 2-2. For the next four minutes, the sides traded turnovers, with Boss earning a CT and freshman Avery O'Hara denied by Seton Hill keeper Katelyn Patts. The hosts were able to regain their lead with a solo goal, as Amos ensured the deficit would stay at one by making three more stops in the final two minutes.

Quarter two would only feature one goal between the two sides, as SHU scored within the first minute off of a free position to lead 4-2. Haney came close to netting on back-to-back efforts, with one hitting off the post and the next stopped by Patts. Each team was shown yellow cards, however neither offense could take advantage, with Amos and Patts both earning saves on free position attempts. Over the final 10 minutes, both netminders made two saves apiece, with the Griffins taking their two-goal lead into the half.

After Seton Hill took the opening draw of the third, FSU's defense kept the offense in check, forcing a shot clock violation to get the ball back. A minute later, junior Gianna Leonardi brought the deficit down to one with a solo effort before Amos made another save in net. Two and a half minutes later, the Griffins restored their two-goal advantage but it wouldn't last long, as senior Izzy Kelly caused a turnover that led to O'Hara calling her own number for a 5-4 score.

Junior Maya Mosslih kept the momentum going by winning the next draw, as Seton Hill was penalized with a yellow card. The hosts nearly got out of it after a Frostburg turnover, however Lamoreaux didn't let them out of their own half with a CT, then took advantage of a pass from Haney to tie things at 5-5. In flipping the script, the Griffins were able to capitalize on a Bobcat card, putting one free position wide before scoring on the next one to regain the lead. Both teams were plagued by turnovers over the next four minutes, as Haney and Burrows both had efforts denied by Patts. With just over a minute left in the period, a turnover in FSU's defensive third allowed SHU to get a two-goal cushion at 7-5.

Opening the fourth with possession, Seton Hill wasn't able to get a clean look at goal, with their first shot being blocked, while at the other end, a green card allowed Burrows to net from the 8-meter. Boss and Amos then each caused a turnover, with the former being fed by Leonardi to tie the game five minutes into the frame. Out of a Griffin timeout, Amos stood tall in net once more, while a turnover by the hosts allowed Haney to net her first of the day and give Frostburg their first lead since the opening period.

The next couple minutes showcased the prowess of both goalkeepers, combining for a trio of saves as the Bobcats looked for an insurance goal while SHU went for the equalizer. As Kelly was given a yellow card, Seton Hill put a pair of efforts off target while another was blocked by FSU's defense, trying to hold off the woman-up advantage. Frostburg was able to stave off the Griffins' attack, as the hosts were unable to get away another shot, thanks in part to a pair of late turnovers, as the final score read 8-7.

Lamoreaux led the way in attack with a pair of goals, while Burrows, Leonardi, and Haney all netted two points apiece on a goal and an assist. Boss drove the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and two groundballs, while Amos had a pair of CT's, a game-high six groundballs, and 14 saves in net.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 4-1 on the year, while Seton Hill drops to 3-3. FSU will return to Bobcat Stadium on Monday, March 16 to face Wilmington (Del.) at 3 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
