Offense Provides Season-High Total in Baseball's 10-Run Win Over UPJ

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Frostburg State Baseball team cruised to their 12th consecutive victory on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Pitt-Johnstown 17-7 on the road.

FSU had the bats going early on, plating six runs in their first trip to the plate. Junior Brian Scott led off by getting hit, moving to second on a sac bunt and third on a wild pitch, while classmate Jackson Schalick and senior Jake Holler drew walks to load the bases. A wild pitch brought in the first run, then junior Logan Helser lofted a deep ball to center for a sac fly, while classmate Ryan Bouma and freshman Anthony Savino laced back-to-back doubles to clear the bases and bring four more across the plate. Following another wild pitch, Savino came home on a single the other way from sophomore Sam Atkinson, putting the Bobcats up 6-0.

Getting the start on the mound, junior Branden Brown saw the first hitter reach on an error, followed by a wild pitch and strikeout swinging. A single into right put runners at the corners, as Frostburg wasn't able to turn the double play on an RBI groundout to get the Mountain Cats on the board. FSU had no intentions of letting UPJ back into the game, starting the second frame with Schalick, freshman Drew Jourdan, and Helser all recording hits, the latter putting a two-RBI single up the middle. Bouma then worked an infield hit while Atkinson drew a two-out walk, as a wild pitch brought in another run. Scott kept the inning going with another two-run knock, moving up twice on wild pitches before executing a double steal with freshman Tanner Cunningham following a walk, bringing the score to 12-1.

Pitt-Johnstown was able to get another score in the bottom half, using a pair of singles either side of two outs and a walk to make the score 12-2, with Brown getting a grounder to first to end the frame. In the third, Holler and Helser were each hit by pitches while Jourdan singled into center, however a double play and grounder to short kept them off the board for the first time of the day. With Brown having been taken off the mound, the Mountain Cats put together a single and a double to get a pair in scoring position, using a passed ball and a sac fly to put two more runs up for a 12-4 game.

The Bobcats got their bats going again in the fourth, as Scott reached on an error while Cunningham was plunked, paving the way for Schalick and Jourdan plating a pair of RBI singles either side of another error to put up three scores and an 11-run lead. As Frostburg turned to more relievers, junior Evan Biddle tossed the cleanest inning of any pitcher so far, working a pop up and grounder to Bouma before allowing a full-count walk, but got a fly ball to center to end the frame scoreless.

Neither side put up much offense in the fifth, as junior Ben Berger worked out of a lead-off single with a strikeout, fly out, and pop out. With several substitutes now coming into the game, Frostburg continued their offensive momentum in the sixth, as freshman Landon Marple ran out an infield single before Jourdan walked, as a wild pitch moved both runners up. Junior Konner Pittman stepped to the plate and brought both home, lining a single to left for a 17-4 advantage.

Pitt-Johnstown kept churning out at-bats, using a walk, stolen base, single, and sac fly to put in another score, as freshman Dom Erculiani worked out of further damage by getting a fly ball to right. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Mac Crismond was able to get around a lead-off single, getting a foul out and a pair of swinging K's for a scoreless outing. UPJ was able to plate another pair of runs, scoring once in both the eighth and ninth innings, while FSU remained scoreless in bringing the final to 17-7.

Scott and Jourdan both recorded three-hit games, while Helser drove in a game-high three RBI. Biddle earned the win, as he, Berger, and Crismond all had shutout appearances on the mound with three combined strikeouts.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 20-6 on the year, while Pitt-Johnstown falls to 11-18. The Bobcats will return to Bob Wells Field on Friday, April 3 to start a four-game series against West Liberty at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
