15 K's from Dodson Pave Way for Baseball Sweep of WV Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Baseball team swept their doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan, winning 8-0 and 16-7 on Thursday afternoon in their official 2026 home opener.

FSU sent out sophomore Zach Dodson to the mound, who made quick work of WVWC in the top of the first before his offense instantly gave him some cushion. Junior Brian Scott and freshman Tanner Cunningham led things off with a single each, then after both runners stole a base, senior Jake Holler singled up the middle, scoring both to give Frostburg an early 2-0 lead.

The second inning passed without much action from either offense, as Wesleyan got their first hit off of Dodson in the third before he struck out the side. Cunningham came up in the bottom of the third and belted a homer over the left field fence for the first of his collegiate career. Junior Jackson Schalick continued the rally with a single, as freshman Drew Jourdan and junior Logan Helser followed suit, which alongside a throwing error, allowed two runs to cross, increasing FSU's lead to five.

Dodson continued to mow through WVWC's lineup, getting a grounder and back-to-back strikeouts in the fourth. Despite redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael hitting a double and Cunningham working a walk and both stealing a base, Frostburg wasn't able to tack on. Another pair of strikeouts were added to Dodson's ledger in the fifth, as FSU threatened in their at-bats, with Helser getting hit by a pitch, then junior Ryan Bouma reached on an error before both moved up a base from a wild pitch, but no runs came from it as WV Wesleyan got the last batter to fly out. In the sixth, Dodson went out and got three more K's as FSU added three more runs in the bottom half. Sophomore Sam Atkinson led off with a single before Scott doubled to left to put both men in scoring position. Cunningham followed with a sac fly before Schalick walked, then Holler reached base via an error, which scored Scott, and Schalick scored the eighth run on a single up the middle from Jourdan. In the seventh inning, Dodson had the most traffic on the day, allowing back-to-back singles, however he worked out of it with two popups and a strikeout to give Frostburg the 8-0 win.

Scott, Carmichael, Jourdan, and Cunningham all recorded a pair of hits, with the latter two driving in a combined three runs while Holler knocked in two. Dodson earned the win, pitching seven complete innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out a career-high 15 batters, the most by any Frostburg pitcher at the Division II level.

In game two, FSU sent out junior John Smith to toe the rubber, as he ran into a bit of trouble with a one-out walk and double, however the defense helped him out with an inning-ending double play. The offense then came out firing, as Scott singled up the middle, followed by a Schalick walk and Holler lining one into the left-center gap, bringing Scott home. Jourdan beat out a grounder to short that brought Schalick in, followed by back-to-back free bases to Helser and Bouma to plate another, then Carmichael worked a sac fly to right, making the score 4-0 after one.

WV Wesleyan found their bats in the second, using a double and back-to-back singles to net their first run of the day, however Smith worked out of further damage with a pair of grounders and a swinging strike to keep the lead at three. The visitors then used some two-out magic in the third, working a single into left and another two-base knock to cut the deficit down to 4-2. Seeking some separation, Frostburg's offense added two more runs in the bottom of the third, as Helser singled before going to second on a wild pitch and Bouma doubled to right, scoring the former. Junior Johnny Antonelli then shot one to right field, bringing in Bouma for a 6-2 lead. In the top of the fourth, Smith worked his most efficient inning of the day, setting down WVWC by striking out two batters and fielding a weak pop up.

In the bottom of the frame, Schalick and Holler walked before Jourdan legged out another infield single to load the bases. Another free pass to Helser moved everyone up a base, scoring Schalick, then Bouma singled to knock in Holler and Jourdan before a grounder from Carmichael scored FSU's tenth run.
In his last inning of work, Smith got out of a two-out jam, allowing back-to-back singles before inducing a ground ball to end the frame. His offense continued to work in the fifth, as Cunningham led things off by doubling down the left line while Schalick walked and Holler singled to bring Cunningham home. After another Helser walk, junior Konner Pittman came in to pinch hit and sent a single into left field, which scored Schalick and Holler for a 13-2 lead. Junior Evan Biddle came in to pitch in the bottom of the sixth, easily putting three WV Wesleyan batters on a strikeout, fly out, and groundout.

A trio of freshmen led off the sixth, as Mason Kelleher began with a walk before Mike Swick reached on an error, as Cunningham put both into scoring position on a sac bunt, allowing Landon Marple to double to right center to score a pair. Still with just one out, junior Cole Carter singled, which brought Marple in for a 16-2 lead. In the top of the seventh, WVWC was able to generate by far their best inning of the series, using four walks, a pair of doubles, a single, and an error to net five runs. Senior Bryce Snyder was finally able to record the final two outs on a swinging strike and a liner caught in right.

Jourdan, Scott, Holler, and Bouma each had a pair of hits, with the latter two knocking in two and four runs, respectively, while Marple and Pittman both had two RBIs. Smith got the win, pitching five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out five. In relief, Biddle pitched a flawless inning, striking out one, as Snyder came in for two-thirds of an inning and struck out one.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 17-6, extending its win streak to nine in a row, while WV Wesleyan falls to 6-21. FSU is back at Bob Wells Field on Sunday, March 29, for a doubleheader against Davis & Elkins starting at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
