FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Baseball team pushed their winning streak up to 11 games in their home sweep over Davis & Elkins, winning by scores of 9-2 and 8-2.
Â
Sophomore Hunter Layhew took the bump to start game one and immediately got out of a lead-off single by picking the runner off at first before getting a strikeout and groundout to end the frame. He was given a quick lead, as junior Brian Scott lined a single into left while freshman Tanner Cunningham was hit by a pitch, then junior Jackson Schalick drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Senior Jake Holler grounded a ball to third, allowing Scott to score, however it was at the cost of two outs, with a swinging strike keeping the damage to just one run.
Â
Layhew sat the Senators down in order in the second, then FSU again left the bases loaded in the bottom half after redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael and Scott drew walks, while Cunningham was hit again, with a fly out keeping the game at 1-0. Another pair of K's from Layhew put D&E away quietly, as he was given an insurance run in the bottom of the third. Holler led off with a walk and moved to second on a grounder, eventually being driven in on Carmichael lining a double to left to double the advantage.
Â
In the top of the fourth, Layhew found himself in his first real trouble, allowing a one-out single and walk, however he kept Davis & Elkins off the board with back-to-back fly balls caught by Cunningham in center. Frostburg's offense added another pair in the bottom half, as Scott was walked while Cunningham reached on an error that put both runners in scoring positions. Schalick and Holler both lofted balls into the outfield for back-to-back sac flies to grow the lead to 4-0.
Â
The Senators failed to do anything aside from a walk in the fifth, as junior Ryan Bouma put a one-out double to the gap in left-center during FSU's at-bats. After Scott was walked again, Cunningham picked up his first hit of the day on a two-bagger to left to put another run on the board. D&E finally was able to put together an offensive inning in the sixth, working back-to-back singles to lead things off. Layhew was able to strike out the next batter, however that was followed by a hit batter and a walk, bringing in a run and putting graduate Ty Morris on the mound. He was able to get a ground ball that brought a runner across the plate at the cost of an out before getting out of the frame with a strikeout looking with the score standing at 5-2.
Â
FSU was able to put away any indication of a late Davis & Elkins comeback in their trip to the plate, putting four runs on the board. Holler and freshman Drew Jourdan worked back-to-back singles to start the inning, with senior pinch runner Tiernan Daly then stealing third. Carmichael drove in a run on a hit, then after Bouma was hit, a wild pitch brought Jourdan home. Sophomore Sam Atkinson capped things off with a two-RBI knock into left, putting Frostburg up 9-2. Morris stayed in the game, entrusted to close things out, which he did on a pop up and back-to-back grounders to secure the seven-run win.
Â
Carmichael led the offense with a pair of hits and RBI, with Atkinson and Holler each also driving in two runs. Layhew threw 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with five K's, while Morris didn't allow an earned run in 1.2 innings of work to earn his first save of the year.
Â
Looking to take the sweep, sophomore Kamden Sowers was given the ball in game two, working around a one-out single with a fly ball to right and a swinging strikeout. As they had done in the first game, the Bobcats started with an early lead in their first at-bats, with Cunningham reaching on a fielder's choice after Scott had led off with a single, as Schalick drilled a ball deep into left for a two-run bomb.
Â
In the second, Sowers was helped out by some solid defense after allowing a lead-off single, as Schalick made a catch in shallow left, then freshman Will Mollman fielded a sharp grounder at first, stepping on the bag and throwing the runner out at second for a double play. With Frostburg going down in order, the Senators looked to get themselves going in the third, leading off with a hit by pitch followed by a one-out single and walk to load the bases. Settling down, Sowers got a much-needed high pop up to Carmichael at short, then struck the final batter out looking to get out of the jam and preserve the 2-0 lead.
Â
The first two D&E batters in the fourth were hit by pitches, as freshman Bryce Bauer came on in relief of Sowers. A sac bunt moved the runners up, then a grounder to second brought in their first run, however Bauer kept the damage to just one after a backwards K to stay up 2-1. FSU was able to take advantage of a Senator misplay in the bottom half, as Jourdan walked and stole second, then Carmichael grounded a ball to short that was mishandled, allowing the former to come all the way around to score to double the lead.
Â
Davis & Elkins led the fifth off with a single hoping to stay within touching distance but Bauer got a fielder's choice, strikeout, and fly out to end the frame. The Bobcats tacked on in their at-bats, as freshman Mason Kelleher drew a lead-off walk followed by Scott reaching on a fielder's choice and Cunningham singling to left. After a fly out to left brought the second out, Holler lined a ball down the right field line that just stayed fair, legging out a triple while driving in a pair of runs to go up 5-1.
Â
The Senators were put down in order by Bauer in the sixth, as the bats stayed hot for the Bobcats in the bottom half. Mollman lined a single into right to lead off and was replaced on the bases by Daly, who executed a double steal with Bouma after the latter drew a walk to get both into scoring position. Kelleher and Scott were then both awarded free bases to put in a run, as another D&E error off the bat of Schalick plated two more for an 8-1 advantage. In the top of the seventh, Davis & Elkins got their first runner on via an error before following with a single up the middle and a walk to put the bases full on junior Joey Serafin. A fielder's choice brought in a run and put runners on the corners, however the rally stopped there as Serafin worked a pop up and swinging strikeout to bring the game to a close with an 8-2 final.
Â
Schalick and Holler each drove in a pair of RBI, while Cunningham scored twice offensively. Sowers was charged with one run on three hits to go with a pair of strikeouts, as Bauer earned his first career win on three shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Â
With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 19-6 on the year, while D&E drops to 4-23. FSU next will have some mid-week non-conference action as they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday, March 31 at 3 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
