Fairmont Pitching Brings Softball's Winning Streak to a Close

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team saw their double-digit win streak come to an end on Wednesday, falling 5-1 and 3-2 to Fairmont State.

Game one began with junior Kylee Piconi lining a one-out single into center, however a fielder's choice and fly out ended the Bobcat at-bats. The Fighting Falcons came up in the bottom half and took advantage of a pair of Frostburg errors alongside a triple to plate two runs. Following a quiet Frostburg second, Fairmont tacked on another with a two-out rally of a pair of singles either side of an error to score another and go up 3-0.

Both sides went down without doing much at the plate in the third and fourth, as the Bobcats were finally able to find some life in the fifth. Sophomore Bri Russo hit a knock into left, moving up to second on a grounder and coming in to score on an RBI double the other way by senior Ally Myers, getting to within two. The Falcons swiftly hit back again, using some small ball on a couple singles and steals to plate a run, while a walk and another hit put them ahead 5-1.

Senior Gracie Nelson led off the sixth with a bunt single and stole second, however back-to-back strikeouts ended the frame. Fairmont wasn't able to manage much in their trip to the plate, as Frostburg tried an improbably comeback in the seventh. Sophomore Izabella Donaldson drew a one-out walk, then Myers worked another hit through the middle, however a fly ball to right and a pop up to short brought the contest to a close with the hosts taking the four-run win.

Each team went down in order to start game two, as the Bobcats sent Donaldson to the circle against Delaney Haller. The Falcons looked to strike first once again in the bottom of the second, working a pair of walks before a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Donaldson worked an important swinging strikeout, then Piconi threw the lead runner out at home on a grounder, while another K ended the inning with no runs coming across.

Frostburg's offense was able to take advantage of a Fairmont error in the second, as sophomore Zoey Marinello reached second on an error, then moved up on a sac bunt from freshman Sammy Magee. After a pop up to second threatened to end the frame, Piconi stepped in with a clutch single to right to take the lead. The sides went down in order in their next at-bats, as Donaldson was able to escape more trouble in the fourth. After giving up a lead-off walk, she struck the next batter out before repeating the process, putting the runners at first and second with two outs. On a full count pitch, she was able to work a lazy fly ball to right to keep her team up 1-0.

The lone Bobcat action in the fifth was an infield single from Marinello, as the Falcons were able to break through offensively in the bottom half. On another 3-2 pitch, a single down the left field line was followed by a hit by pitch and an error, bringing the tying run home. The next hitter worked an RBI groundout to short to give the hosts the lead at 2-1. Looking to answer, Piconi roped a lead-off double to left, forcing a Fairmont pitching change, which worked after a couple of grounders brought the inning to a close.

Donaldson sat the side down in order, giving her team one more chance at the plate in the seventh. Following a groundout and fly out, sophomore Sage Haller kept Frostburg's hopes alive with a double to straightaway center, then Marinello pulled a ball just inside third to stunningly tie the game at 2-2. Still with a chance to win the game in walk-off fashion, Fairmont wasted little time in back-to-back singles and a double to the gap in left-center to take the sweep 3-2.

With the losses, Frostburg drops to 15-3 on the year, while Fairmont improves to 14-6. The Bobcats will remain on the road as they travel to Salem (WV) on Saturday, March 28 for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
