Dodson's Gem, Late Game 2 Offense Give Baseball Road Sweep of Charleston

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team secured a Saturday sweep of Charleston (WV), winning game one 2-0 and game two 13-3 on the road.

Things started off on the right foot for the Bobcats, as junior Brian Scott beat out a single to the shortstop before classmate Jackson Schalick and senior Jake Holler both singled to load the bases. The Golden Eagles, however, were able to retire the next two batters to keep the game scoreless. Sophomore Zach Dodson got the start and was able to work out of a first and third jam in the bottom of the first, then his classmate Manny Hall provided some run support, as he sent a 3-1 pitch over the right field wall, putting FSU up 1-0.

After a quiet inning and a half, Hall was back up looking for more as he singled to left on two outs, then stole second and third, though nothing came as UC got the last man out. The fifth and sixth were quiet on both sides, as despite Charleston getting a man on each inning, Dodson worked efficiently through the lineup. Seeking to add an insurance run in the seventh, freshman Drew Jourdan worked a two-out walk before stealing second and advancing to third on an error. That would put him in a perfect spot to score, as Scott singled to center, giving Frostburg a bit of breathing room. Junior Joey Serafin came on in relief of Dodson and able to work through the next three outs without much fuss, giving the Bobcats the 2-0 win.

Scott and Hall each tallied two hits and one RBI apiece, as Dodson earned the win, pitching six shutout innings, allowing six hits on just one walk with Serafin taking the save.

The first inning of game two went 1-2-3 for both sides before junior starter John Smith worked his way out of a jam in the second. FSU then threatened after a pair of two-out hit by pitches, but didn't amount to anything as the Golden Eagles got the last batter to fly out. In the bottom of the third, after the first man grounded out, Samuel Lemond hit a home run over the left center wall to give UC a 1-0 lead. Charleston threatened again in the inning with two runners in scoring position, but Smith worked his way out with a strikeout. In the top of the fourth, Holler began things with a simmering line drive down the left field line, followed by Jourdan getting plunked after fouling off five pitches. After an intentional walk to junior Ryan Bouma, redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael lined one right into the left fielder's glove for a sac fly, evening the score at 1-1.

After Frostburg threatened again in the fifth but weren't able to take advantage, graduate Ty Morris came in to pitch as the Golden Eagles added a second run on a sac fly. Their lead was short-lived, however, as Jourdan began the sixth with a hit by pitch before junior Logan Helser doubled, putting runners on second and third. After Bouma worked a walk to load the bases, everyone moved up a base on a wild pitch that scored Jourdan, then another walk was issued to Carmichael and freshman Mike Swick came in to pinch hit, sending the ball down the right field line for a two-RBI double, serving as his first collegiate hit and giving the Bobcats a 4-2 lead. Scott then drew a walk and allowed freshman Tanner Cunningham to step to the plate, as he drilled a 3-2 pitch to left for a single that scored two more before Schalick doubled, bringing the seventh and eighth runs. After Holler and Jourdan were both hit, a Helser groundball scored Schalick, bringing FSU's lead to seven in a 9-2 score.

UC looked to match Frostburg's momentum in the bottom of the sixth, as they scored a run via a fielder's choice, but Morris and the defense limited the damage, getting the next batter to ground into a 4-6-3 double play. In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats didn't put on the brakes whatsoever, as Carmichael led off with a hit by pitch before a perfectly executed hit and run by junior Johnny Antonelli put runners on the corners. With Scott working a walk to load the bases, Cunningham hit a sac fly to center before Schalick belted one over the left field wall for a three-run homer, increasing FSU's lead to ten heading into the bottom of the seventh. Entrusted to get the last three outs, sophomore Mac Crismond retired the side in order to give Frostburg a 13-3 victory.

Schalick was a terror on offense, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs while scoring two runs, as Cunningham added a pair of hits with three RBIs. Smith went four innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four, as Morris and Crimsond combined for three innings with just one run between them, the former earning the win.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 13-6 as Charleston drops to 5-18. FSU is back for day two of the weekend on Sunday, March 22, as they face West Virginia State in Institute, WV, for a doubleheader starting at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com
