Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

#15 Lions Use Strong First Quarter to Defeat Men's Lacrosse

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team fell on the road to No. 15 Molloy by a final score of 11-7 Saturday afternoon.

MU opened with a fast start to the game, winning the opening face-of and scoring within the first minute. After a violation on the resulting FO, junior Henry Sykes was denied by Lion keeper John Basile before penalties on both sides resulted in Molloy netting a solo effort. Frostburg was unable to take advantage of a man-up chance, firing a shot wide before MU put in their third, won the face-off, and netted again 20 seconds later for a 4-0 lead. Basile made another save on junior Logan Yost, as did Bobcat junior netminder Jack Smith, while Sykes and junior Hayden Celio fired a pair of shots wide. Both goalkeepers traded saves over the final five minutes, with the hosts taking their four-goal advantage into the second.

In similar fashion to the first frame, Molloy put home a quickfire goal within 10 seconds to push their lead to five. Basile continued to thwart Frostburg's attack, shutting down senior Graham Allison's effort, then the post denied freshman Keegan Green from getting on the board. Out of a Lions penalty, sophomore Kobe Link saw his shot saved by Basile, while Green and junior Luke Roach both had efforts off target. Turnovers plagued both teams through the next three minutes, as senior Will Stephanos picked up a loose ball and fed classmate Sean Mullineaux to finally get the Bobcats their opening score.

Sensing some momentum, Sykes and Roach both tested Basile before the former found Green on a man-up chance to pull the deficit down to three. Molloy swiftly hit back, putting a shot home to go back up by four just a minute later. The keepers traded saves once more, with Basile stopping both junior Jackson Kanzler and graduate Tyrin Long. In the final minute, junior Kieran Hofgesang came up with a caused turnover and picked up the groundball, eventually leading to Mullineaux finding the back of the net to get within 6-3. Junior Ryder Walter helped ensure that score would hold until the half with a caused turnover, as a last-second MU effort went high of Smith's goal.

Smith made an early save to begin the third period, however a Frostburg turnover allowed the Lions to once again score first and regain a four-goal lead. Sykes then had a shot go wide while Molloy put one off the post, then a slashing penalty against the hosts allowed Sykes to find junior Jack Hooks for a man-up goal and a 7-4 score. FSU looked to inch closer, however Basile made back-to-back saves while Roach hit the post and fired wide on a man-up chance. MU punished the Bobcats for not taking advantage of those chances, netting back-to-back scores 30 seconds apart to take control at 10-4. The only shots through the final three minutes went high and wide, with the Lions taking their six-goal lead into the fourth.

Junior Lukasz Barmosz was substituted in goal to start the final period and immediately got called into action with a save after 20 seconds. The next nine minutes were dominated by the keepers, making a combined five saves with neither side able to score. With just over five minutes to go, Green went on a solo run to find the back of the net, then scored a minute later off a feed from Mullineaux to get within 10-6. Despite losing the resulting face-off, MU was effectively able to end any hopes of a comeback, causing a turnover and scoring to lead by five with four minutes left. Off of a Barmosz save, Sykes was able to put one past Basile, but it would be too late to make an true difference in the 11-7 loss.

Green led the attack with a career-high three goals, while Sykes and Mullineaux combined for three scores and assists. Walter drove the defensive effort on five caused turnovers and four groundballs, as Hofgesang added two apiece of his own.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 6-4 on the year, while Molloy improves to 6-2. FSU will remain on the road to face D'Youville on Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
