MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team fell 15-4 on the road to No. 3 Saint Anselm Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Hawks opened the game by taking the opening face-off and firing a pair of shots that both went wide, then over the next three minutes, each goaltender made a save in net. An FSU penalty paved the way for Saint Anselm to score the opening goal, as just a few seconds later, another win in the X gave them back-to-back scores. The hosts continued to dominate shot attempts, putting another three wide of the mark before finding the cage once more for a 3-0 advantage after six minutes. Midway through the period, junior Jack Smith came up with his second save, as the Bobcats went on the clear where junior Luke Roach fed classmate Baylor Davis to get on the board. Following a Frostburg face-off win, junior Henry Sykes drew a save from Finn Granara, while Smith matched at the other end. A pair of turnovers allowed the Hawks to net their fourth and fifth goals of the quarter, though a Sykes solo effort kept FSU hanging around, trailing 5-2.
Â
Through the first five minutes of the second, Saint Anselm added on to their lead with a pair of goals either side of junior Hayden Celio picking up a saved shot and firing home to make things 7-3. Both teams were plagued by turnovers for the next three minutes, as the Hawks were able to take advantage first before Roach was found by Sykes on a man-up chance for an 8-4 score. Saint Anselm would have the majority of chances over the final five minutes of the half, putting one shot wide, another saved by Smith, and their third putting them ahead 9-4 headed to the half.
Â
The Hawks came out of the break immediately on the front foot, however a combination of some misfired efforts and the post kept their scoring at bay. As Frostburg tried to find some offense of their own, Granara was there on a pair of shots to keep the visitors off the board. After 10 scoreless minutes, Saint Anselm hit back-to-back quickfire scores, then another Granara save led to a solo goal and a 12-4 lead going to the final quarter.
Â
Within the first two minutes, a Bobcat penalty led quickly to a Hawks man-up goal, as Granara continued to shut the door defensively. Freshman Keegan Green, junior Logan Yost, and senior Sean Mullineaux all saw their efforts stopped by Saint Anselm's netminder, as the hosts' defense ensured more opportunities would not come any easier. FSU wouldn't have a shot in the final nine minutes, as the Hawks tacked on two more scores to make the final 15-4.
Â
Sykes and Roach had a goal and an assist each, while junior Ryder Walter and senior Braeden Bushyager led the defensive effort with a combined five caused turnovers and eight groundballs.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 2-3 on the year while Saint Anselm starts their season 1-0. FSU will remain on the road to face Malone on Thursday, March 5 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
