Russell's OT Winner Gives Women's Lacrosse First Victory of 2026

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season in a 14-13 overtime victory on the road against Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon.

After the Huskies won the opening draw, freshman Lauren Kunes caused a turnover to quickly get FSU possession, from which senior Daniella Boss put home the opening goal on a feed from classmate Neila Haney. Over the next five minutes, Haney was denied by both BU keeper Emily Graham and the post while sophomore Liz Amos and junior Maya Mosslih came up with a pair of caused turnovers for the Bobcat defense. Out of a Frostburg turnover, Bloomsburg evened the score on a solo goal, but less than a minute later, Mosslih charged downfield to net one of her own to still lead 2-1. A quick card shown to FSU allowed the Huskies to equalize again, while Haney turned provider again, this time for freshman Avery O'Hara, before the hosts put another goal home to end the period tied at 3-3.

In the first minute of the second quarter, Amos made a save in net that led to freshman Maddie Russell passing to Haney to finish home but Bloomsburg swiftly responded on the next draw, keeping things tied. Over the next five minutes, Frostburg wasn't able to capitalize on a pair of woman-up chances, hitting the post and sending another effort wide, while BU hit back-to-back free position goals to lead 6-4. The Bobcats dominated possession for the next three minutes, not allowing the Huskies a sniff of goal, as Boss fed sophomore Julia Bannister for her first career goal, while Russell netted the equalizer less than a minute later. A late yellow card against Frostburg allowed Bloomsburg to score on the advantage, taking a 7-6 lead into the break.

The Huskies opened the third by winning the draw and eventually converting a free position to go up by two. Each side then traded a pair of goals for the next four minutes, with O'Hara scoring twice and Bloomsburg countering each time, holding a 10-8 advantage. Seeking to extend the lead, BU won the next draw but were immediately thwarted through O'Hara getting the CT and groundball, then finishing her hat trick of the period with an assist from Boss. A minute later, the Huskies scored off another Bobcat card but Mosslih ensured they wouldn't take much momentum with the next draw, as Russell fired home a pass from senior Emily Lamoreaux to stay within 11-10. Having come on midway through the frame, freshman Kiera Pieper denied BU's next attempt on goal, as the quarter ended off of a pair of turnovers from each team.

Bloomsburg started the fourth quarter with possession and needed just 20 seconds to score to again lead by two. FSU then survived a wave of Husky pressure, seeing one shot go high, forcing a shot clock violation, and Pieper coming up with another stop to stay within touching distance. A non-releasable BU yellow card provided a spark for Frostburg's offense, as Boss and Haney went for back-to-back woman-up goals, then a turnover by the hosts allowed O'Hara to find Haney to turn the game around with a 13-12 lead. The Bobcat defense kept BU in check over the next six minutes, as seniors Sydney Stone and Izzy Kelly joined sophomore Kam Lee in causing a trio of turnovers while Pieper produced another save. FSU's offense couldn't generate more pressure, allowing Bloomsburg to finally find the back of the net with just over three minutes to go. The Huskies were denied by the post, then with overtime approaching, Pieper made a last-second stop to preserve the tie and head into the extra period.

Frostburg won the opening draw but immediately gave up a turnover, however wouldn't be punished as Kelly got the ball back through a CT. After getting the clear, O'Hara thought she had the winner in seeing her shot cannon off the crossbar, then Russell picked up the loose ball and fired home to secure the 14-13 victory.

O'Hara led the attack with four goals and a pair of assists, while Haney and Boss combined for three of each and Russell added a hat trick. Freshman Delaney Burrows and Mosslih drove the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and six groundballs between the pair.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 1-1 on the year while Bloomsburg falls to 1-2. FSU will make their home debut on Wednesday, March 4 to face Shepherd at 5 p.m. from Bobcat Stadium. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
