Pitching, Extra Inning Offense Give Baseball Win Over Bloomsburg

MORGANTOWN, W. Va.  The Frostburg State Baseball team won 6-2 in extra innings against Bloomsburg in extra innings on Saturday evening.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Bobcats sent junior John Smith to the mound, as he went three up three down throughout each of the first two frames. The FSU offense also got off to a slow start, being limited to just one hit until the top of the third. Sophomore Sam Atkinson doubled in the left-center gap before junior Brian Scott was hit by a pitch, however BU got a double play, eventually leading to clearing the bases without a run coming across.

Up to bat in the bottom of the third, Bloomsburg managed to break through to Smith with some small ball, as a single was followed by a walk, sacrifice bunt, and sac fly, scoring the first run of the game. Once again, the Bobcats put runners on early in the fourth as senior Jake Holler led things off with a single, but another twin killing quickly took him off the bases, while junior Logan Helser was hit by a pitch and classmate Ryan Bouma hit a soft single past the pitcher with a groundout ending another threat. Smith continued to deal, with the third being his lone blemish on the day, setting the side down without much fuss in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames.

His offense finally rewarded him in the top of the sixth, as Holler led off with a solo shot to tie things 1-1. Frostburg then looked to take the lead in the seventh, as Scott and freshman Drew Jourdan ripped back-to-back singles into right, but a groundout and strikeout again brought an end to the inning. Out for another battle on the mound, Smith worked out of a lead-off walk, helped out by a great snag at third by Jourdan that resulted in a double play. Neither side could capitalize on a lead-off baserunner to begin the eighth, as junior Joey Serafin came on in relief of Smith, getting six straight outs through two innings, sending the game to extras.

With FSU going down in order to start the tenth, in the bottom half, Serafin hit the first batter with a pitch before cleanly fielding a sac bunt and then working a fly out to center. A pinch-hitter was sent to the plate for Bloomsburg, but Head Coach Anthony Williams called for an intentional walk that worked in his favor, as Serafin was able to get the next batter to pop up to second and strand the two runners.

Redshirt sophomore CJ Carmichael led off the top of the eleventh with a walk, followed by freshman Will Mollan doubling to right center, sending Carmichael to third and Bouma drawing another free pass to load the bases. Even after a pitching change, freshman Mason Kelleher worked another walk to move everyone up a base and gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Scott then lined one into right field for a single, scoring Mollman, while Jourdan reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore Manny Hall and Shalick both drew walks, scoring two more runs. Holler capped things off with a sacrifice fly to center, which scored Jourdan and gave the Bobcats a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eleventh.

Entrusted to get the final three outs, Serafin was able to get a strikeout looking before surrendering two singles and a walk between a fly out to load the bases with two gone. The next batter lined a ball to third that was knocked down by Jourdan, saving multiple runners from scoring, as the Huskies plated just one on the infield single. Serafin didn't let that deter him, as he got the following batter to hit a much easier grounder to Jourdan for the final out of the game, securing FSU the 6-2 win.

Holler recorded three hits on the day with two RBIs, as Scott also had a multi-hit game alongside a walk. Smith pitched seven innings, surrendering one run on just two hits, as Serafin went four innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts, earning the win.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 6-2 on the year as Bloomsburg drops to 3-1. The Bobcats are back for day three in West Virginia as they face Lock Haven at Frank Loria Park with first pitch scheduled for 11:30 am. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
