RALEIGH, N.C. – The Frostburg State Softball team picked up three wins on its first day of playable games at the Triangle Classic, defeating Elizabeth City State, College of Staten Island and Pitt-Johnstown by combined scores of 20-2.
After several weather delays in the first two weeks of the season, the Bobcats finally took the field for the first time in 2026, beginning its tripleheader by facing ECSU. Frostburg wasted no time getting on the board, with senior Gracie Nelson and sophomore Zoey Marinello lining back-to-back singles up the middle, both being brought home on Arden Miller opening her senior season with a three-run bomb to right. Freshman Sammy Magee took the circle to make her collegiate debut and was able to settle some nerves after allowing a single and a double, as senior catcher Olivia Stetler helped out by throwing out the first runner trying to steal, followed by a pair of swinging strikeouts.
Frostburg's bats continued their hot streak in the second, as senior Ally Myers led off with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt, while Nelson was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a fly ball to right, then Miller would pick up two more RBI on a single hit the other way. Stetler kept the frame moving with a knock into left, then sophomore Bri Russo would double to plate two more runs and go up 7-0. Magee worked a 1-2-3 second then had to work out of a pair of two-out walks in the third, picking up her fourth and fifth K's in the process.
FSU threatened again in the fourth, as Marinello drew a lead-off walk and moved to third on a Miller single, though the former was thrown out at home trying to score on a sac fly off the bat of Stetler. In the fourth and fifth frames, Magee allowed just one base hit while earning another couple strikeouts. The Bobcats seemed as if they would go another inning without a run, as Nelson was nearly left stranded following a one-out single, however Miller bombed a double while Stetler lined a single to plate two runs and put the mercy rule into effect up 9-0 going to the bottom half. Seeking to polish off her debut with a win, Magee allowed a pair of walks either side of a groundout to third, but then worked a fly ball to center and her eighth strikeout of the day to complete the de facto shutout win.
The middle game would come against CSI and another FSU freshman making their opening start in Izzy Dietrich, who worked a trio of ground balls in getting out of a two-out double during the first. The Bobcats again had the bats going early again in the bottom half, with Nelson walking to lead off and Marinello smakcing a double that led to Stetler hitting a three-run homer. Russo kept things rolling with another two-bagger, then sophomore Sage Haller singled to left to plate the former and move the latter to second in the process. Haller then moved to third on a wild pitch and eventually came in to score after Myers drew a walk, putting the score at 5-0 after one.
Dietrich was perfect through the second and third frames before allowing just her second hit of the day to start the top of the fourth. The Dolphin runner would advance twice on a grounder to first and a fly ball to center but went no further as a routine grounder was fielded cleanly by junior Kylee Piconi at third. Marinello legged out an infield single to start the bottom of the fourth, while Miller followed with a base knock and Russo drew a walk to load the bases. With nowhere to put Haller, she picked up an RBI on another free base, then Piconi put a ball up the middle to plate two more and again bring mercy rule into effect up 8-0. In similar fashion to Magee in game one, Dietrich had some traffic to start her final inning, allowing a walk and sac bunt to put a runner on second, but a strikeout and grounder to second ended with yet another shutout Bobcat victory.
For the third consecutive game, FSU would again score in the first, taking on UPJ to close out day one. Nelson and Marinello drew back-to-back walks to start things off before both moving up and the former scoring on a pair of passed balls. A Mountain Cat error off the bat of Stetler then plated Marinello, putting Frostburg up 2-0. Sophomore Izabella Donaldson worked the mound for game three, getting out of some early trouble on a walk and wild pitch by fielding a comebacker and striking out the next two batters. Neither side could take advantage of free bases in the second, as Stetler propped up some two-out magic in the top of the third with a double to straightaway center, coming home on another Pitt-Johnstown error.
In the bottom of the third, UPJ would finally take advantage of their walks, putting a pair of runners on while moving them up on a wild pitch. A lined single to center brought each runner across, but Donaldson was able to settle down, getting back-to-back groundouts to stay in the lead 3-2. She wouldn't allow any baserunners until the bottom of the sixth, where a two-out double threatened to tie the game, but the next batter was called out on strikes. With FSU's offense unable to add any insurance runs, Donaldson came back out for the seventh looking to close things out for another Bobcat complete game. She fielded her position again on a grounder before allowing a single to the next hitter, as an error in right allowed the runner to move to scoring position. Nelson was able to grab a lined ball at her in center, then Donaldson shut the door with a swinging strikeout to take the 3-2 decision.
With the victories, Frostburg is now 3-0 to start the year and will play another three games tomorrow, March 1. The Bobcats will face Mansfield at 10 AM followed by Felician and Bluefield State. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
