Men's Soccer Held to Scoreless Home Draw with WV Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team drew with West Virginia Wesleyan at home 0-0 on Sunday afternoon.

FSU would start with possession in their attacking side of the field and get the first shot at goal with sophomore Nate Kennedy flicking a header that was gathered by keeper Lucas Fry. Wesleyan had their first chance of the game go high over the bar, then 15 minutes into the half, graduate Josiah Emerson would keep the game tied, sprawling to his right to make a save. Five minutes later, sophomore Inzaghi Harmon sent a volley high of goal, then senior Brian Gomez was played into the box by graduate Mateo Cuadros but dragged his shot wide.

At the other end, WVWC had a wayward effort, while sophomore Frank Stare made a great run down the left wing and crossed into classmate Nate Kennedy, whose shot was sliced wide. Neither team generated much in the final 15 minutes, as the score at the break still stood at 0-0.

10 minutes into the second half, Cuadros chipped a ball down the right wing for junior Dom Good to run onto, as he beat one defender and passed to Kennedy, whose goal-bound effort was blocked and eventually gathered by Fry. Wesleyan had a shot from distance right at Emerson, as the remainder of the half was largely dominated by Frostburg. Freshman Abdallah Soulemana had a pair of chances on headers via a throw and a corner but both were well-saved by Fry, as on the latter effort Harmon flicked his header just wide.

That was followed up a minute later by Good hitting a powerful shot on his left foot just over the bar. WVWC's defense was clinging onto the shutout bid, as senior Anthony Diaz fired high while efforts from freshman Lynghton Romage, graduate Kevin Garcia-Torres, and Cuadros were all blocked before reaching Fry. With 10 minutes to go, both teams went in search of a winner, as Stare sent a free kick high and wide, while Emerson made a pair of impressive saves at the other end.

FSU looked certain to score in the final three minutes, as sophomore David Williams ran through on goal but was denied by the legs of Fry, then Soulemana and Williams had back-to-back efforts parried away, with the Wesleyan keeper fending off both attempts that from 10 yards away. With just a second left on the clock, WVWC was awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal, as Emerson was able to tip the shot over the bar to end the game at 0-0.

With the result, Frostburg is now 5-2-4 on the season while WV Wesleyan stands at 0-8-2. FSU will next be on the road Sunday, October 11 at MEC newcomers Shawnee State, with kick-off set for 2:30 p.m. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com.
