Third Quarter Goals Give #2 Warriors Victory Over Field Hockey

FROSTBURG, Md. – The second-ranked East Stroudsburg field hockey team scored twice in the third quarter to beat Frostburg 2-0 in a midday PSAC game at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday.

After four minutes of back-and-forth play, ESU had the first attacking chance, forcing freshman goalkeeper Jenna Yazzetti into a save. Three minutes later the Warriors were given the first penalty corner of the game, from which the fired a shot wide. Within the next minute, another effort missed the mark, as Yazzetti produced another stop with the quarter going scoreless headed to the second.

East Stroudsburg quickly earned another penalty corner in the first minute of the next frame, putting two shots wide again. The Warriors came back a couple minutes later, with Yazzetti makign a kick save off a corner. Neither side managed much for the next 10 minutes, as Rylie McGrath fired a high shot that Yazzetti was able to get her hand to. In the last two minutes, Frostburg created a late chance with a penalty corner, as a deflected shot by freshman Izzy Gibbons went wide of the mark, sending the teams to halftime tied 0-0.

The Warriors wasted little time breaking through in the third quarter, as McGrath made a run on the end line and hit a shot off of Yazzetti's helmet, with the rebound falling to Lisa Pasman to finish home. Keeping up the pressure, East Stroudsburg had a pair of efforts blocked by the Bobcat defense, as on the second shot, a trip in the circle resulted in a penalty stroke. Bailey Griffin stepped in and fired into the left side of the cage, doubling the advantage after four minutes. FSU tried to get back into the game off a counter attack, with Gibbons just missing another chance. Over the next five minutes, the Warriors had one effort blocked and a second go wide before junior Sydney Spivey produced Frostburg's first shot on goal in the final seconds, being denied by Jet Vermeulen in goal.

With some fire in their play, the Bobcats came out quick in the fourth period, working the ball up to Gibbons who again fired just wide after two minutes. ESU had an effort blocked, then after being awarded another corner, sent a shot off target. With four minutes to go, FSU tested Vermeulen on several occasions, as sophomore Caroline Earnshaw had a great chance saved, then off a corner, classmate Kenzie Cummins was also denied. From another corner, Frostburg's best chance came on freshman Elijha Hella-Myers getting a shot off near the cage but Vermeuelen swept it away, as a potential penalty stroke was also waved off. The Warriors were able to hold the Bobcats without another shot the rest of the way in securing the 2-0 final.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 6-8 overall while East Stroudsburg improves to 13-2. The Bobcats next hit the road on Wednesday, October 28, to face Shippensburg at 4 p.m. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
