FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team took a 2-2 decision against Wheeling at home on Wednesday evening.
Â
FSU looked for a quick start, as they earned a throw-in deep in Cardinal territory, where sophomore Spencer Davis flicked a header wide. At the other end, WU won a corner kick, where graduate keeper Josiah Emerson made a fine reaction save, then the Bobcats cleared the follow-up effort off the line. Seven minutes in, Dominic Lopez Aceves made a run into the box and got brought down for a Wheeling penalty, which Jon-Michael Gordon put away for a 1-0 lead.
Â
Sophomore Lynghton Romage looked for an immediate response but shot high and wide of goal. Frostburg tried to find a way past Wheeling's defense 13 minutes later, however efforts from sophomore Christ Fopossi and junior Dom Good were both blocked by defenders. At the 25-minute mark, a WU free kick gave way to a fast-paced FSU counter-attack, as sophomore Frank Stare ran in behind and played a ball across that Good was able to tap home to tie things at 1-1.
Â
Now on the ascension, graduate Mateo Cuadros sent a free kick just over the bar, then classmate Kevin Garcia-Torres had a fantastic chance just a couple yards from goal but couldn't get his shot on target. Sophomore Nate Kennedy then saw his shot blocked while Garcia-Torres put the follow-up wide, then had another effort go right at keeper Alberto Madail. In the final three minutes of the half, Fopossi had a shot blocked on the line, then freshman Grant Hamilton missed wide of the mark to keep things tied at the break.
Â
The Cardinals came out the faster team in the second half, as a free kick five minutes in was floated to the back post, where Javier Ramos was able to control and find Reilly Nickles to fire home for a 2-1 advantage. FSU tried to respond with senior Anthony Diaz and Romage having efforts blocked, then Davis tried a left-footed shot that lacked the power to beat Madail.
Â
After 17 minutes, Good had a shot off target, then Emerson was able to easily gather a hit from distance. Garcia-Torres flicked a header wide from a corner, while Stare tried to find the bottom corner on a curling effort, going just the wrong side of the post. With a little over 20 minutes left to play, Davis launched a throw-in from the near side that freshman Abdallah Soulemana met with his head, getting just enough of it to hit the inside of the far post and in to tie things back up at 2-2.
Â
As both sides went in search of a winner, sophomore David Williams had the next couple chances for the Bobcats, getting a head to a corner but sending it just high of the bar, while his next shot was blocked in front of goal. Frostburg then had to fend off a pair of corners before a foul just at the edge of the box gave WU an opportunity, however Elie Simon's curler went just wide on the far side.
Â
With seven minutes left in the contest, Soulemana played Stare in down the left wing, as his cross was inch perfect to Williams, however he couldn't get the right contact on the ball as Madail was able to easily gather. Nickles then got his head to a long free kick but couldn't trouble Emerson too much, while Davis had a poke towards goal off a corner that Madail scooped up. In the final three minutes, Romage had a header go wide while Stare looked to net a winner but saw his shot deflected away, with the horn sounding on the 2-2 final.
Â
FSU held a 26-7 advantage in shots, with a closer 7-6 margin in efforts on target.
Â
With the draw, Frostburg moves to 7-2-6 on the year, while Wheeling is now 5-8-1. The Bobcats will next head on the road to face No. 9 Davis & Elkins on Sunday, October 25 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com. Â
