GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell on the road 92-67 to Glenville State Wednesday.
Â
Both teams began the game quickly, as sophomore Trey Simmons needed just four seconds off the opening tip to start the scoring, while GSU hit a three and a pair of free throws, to which graduate Kyle Whippen also got to the line, as the visitors led 5-4 after the first two minutes. The next four minutes were much slower, as the Pioneers earned another trip to the stripe to go with a pair of layups, while freshman Mitch Finefrock hit from deep and Simmons split a pair of freebies for an 11-8 score.
Â
The sides went back-and-forth up to the midway point of the half, as junior Vilius Slanina and Whippen went four-of-four at the line and redshirt freshman DJ Daniel drove to the rim, though Glenville still held a 20-14 advantage. GSU kept trying to build on their lead, but a triple by junior Zane McCarty and lay-ins from Whippen and Daniel allowed the Bobcats to stay within three with just under eight minutes to go.
Â
Frostburg's scoring halted from that point, as it would be another five and a half minutes before another field goal went in, as the offense was limited to three combined free throws between Simmons and redshirt sophomore Blake Burrows, allowing the Pioneers to build a 37-22 lead. Daniel finally ended the drought from behind the arc, then McCarty and Simmons went for back-to-back buckets to trip the halftime deficit down to 39-31.
Â
Over the first three minutes of the second half, neither team seemed to be able to get defensive stops as the game turned into an offensive shootout. Finefrock nailed a pair of treys either side of another by Daniel, while sophomore Christopher Meakin also got in on the three-point contest, however GSU matched them each step of the way with a 55-43 lead.
Â
Daniel scored FSU's next five through a driving layup and a triple but the offense stalled over the next two minutes while the Pioneer offense churned out a 19-point lead. Simmons drove into the lane before Meakin and Whippen converted from the stripe, however another four-minute drought allowed Glenville to push ahead 82-54. McCarty and Slanina hit pull-up jumpers either side of a lay-in by freshman Chris Cochran, who then got to the rim and converted from behind the arc. Redshirt freshman Cash Herndon ended the scoring with just over a minute to go, knocking in two free throws, as the final score read 92-67.
Â
Daniel led FSU with 15 points to go with eight rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, while Whippen pulled down a game-high nine boards.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 10-9 on the year, while Glenville improves to 12-7. The Bobcats will return home to face Concord on Saturday, January 31 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
