Gillette's Second Half Strike Not Enough as Women's Soccer Falls to Point Park

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team fell on the road to Point Park by a final score of 2-1 Saturday.

The Pioneers began the match with the first two chances, firing a pair of shots off target in the first six minutes. FSU got themselves going with sophomore Cassidy Paige having an effort off a corner kick saved by PPU keeper Frederieke Rijlaarsdam. As Frostburg began to control possession, they regularly got themselves into attacking opportunities but had a majority of their shots blocked by the Point Park backline.

Having survived the Bobcats' repeated chances, the Pioneers went the other way and forced junior Mia Graff into action. After one easy save following a throw, a miscommunication at the back required Graff to claw the ball away which resulted in a corner, then made herself big enough to deflect a wide open effort behind. Both teams went back-and-forth trying to try and force their way through, but a total of four shots got blocked in a five-minute span.

With the half entering the final 15 minutes, seniors Mary Greco and Morgan Mrizek along with sophomore Rayiah Davis all tried their luck from distance but were all easily gathered by Rijlaarsdam. It would be PPU to take the upper hand, as a loose ball in midfield found its way to Jurnee Durrett-Finney, who was able to split the defense and slot home for a 1-0 advantage.

Point Park frustrated the FSU attack to start the second 45, as it took 10 minutes for the visitors to get a shot on target, which again Rijlaarsdam was there to deny. The Pioneers then doubled their lead, getting a two-on-two opportunity in behind, where Paula Sole played to an open Rebecca Pihlgren for a finish into the right side of the goal and a 2-0 lead.

Neither team was able to hit the target with any regularity, either missing the mark or having efforts blocked. Senior Carly Gillette drew another save before giving the Bobcats some hope with 15 minutes to go. Sophomore Elena Fernandez did extremely well to hold the ball up just outside the 18 before laying off to Gillette to fire from 25 yards out, beating Rijlaarsdam to get to 2-1.

Greco had another effort looking for an equalizer that was too close to the netminder as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Frostburg pressed high but couldn't get much passed the Pioneer defense. Greco and Gillette saw shots blocked while sophomores Mollie Rebuck and Ellie Fiedler went off target as the hosts held on for their 2-1 victory.

FSU held a 28-16 advantage in shots, with 10 on goal to five for PPU.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 3-3-1 while Point Park improves to 4-2-1. The Bobcats remain on the road as they travel to Glenville State on Wednesday, October 1 at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
