Gillette's Blast, Brace from Rebuck Helps Women's Soccer Take Road Win Over GSU

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team used a strong second half performance to take down Glenville State 4-1 on the road Wednesday evening.

It took six minutes for either team to generate a chance, as FSU took the first effort with sophomore Ellie Fiedler firing wide. Three minutes later, following a Bobcat corner and throw-in, senior Carly Gillette shot towards keeper Lucia Lopez but it was straight at her. Sophomore Mollie Rebuck had a great chance to get on the board, but her close shot went just inches wide of the post. GSU then netted the opening goal with their first opportunity of the night, as a mistake at the back allowed Aitana Viejo a chip-shot goal at the 15-minute mark.

Frostburg was able to immediately respond, however, as a Pioneer turnover gave the ball to Rebuck, who found Gillette in the middle of the park to rip a 25-yard strike past Lopez for a 1-1 tie. FSU held the majority of possession in search of a go-ahead goal, with senior Morgan Mrizek the next to draw a Lopez save.

It took another 10 minutes before the Bobcats had their next opportunity, as sophomore Rayiah Davis was played through down the right side, but she couldn't get enough power on her shot from a tight angle to beat Lopez, who gathered the ball in her arms. Gillette then had another powerful shot blocked, while Viejo had an effort go wide and another shut down by junior Madison Hinton on a block to go into halftime still deadlocked.

FSU came out determined to star the second half, with sophomore Cassidy Paige getting a quick save out of Lopez, while Mrizek and Davis both went off target on efforts. A few minutes later, Glenville went on a rare attack forward, as sophomore Kayla Doty made an easy save on a shot from distance.

With 15 minutes gone, Frostburg earned a corner kick, which was swung in by senior Mary Greco onto the head of Paige, whose shot was cleared off the line but fell right to Rebuck, who was able to bundle in for a 2-1 lead. Three consecutive Bobcat shots then went either wide or were blocked, keeping the Pioneers in the game. The hosts nearly capitalized off a corner, with a shot from the top of the box gathered right on the line by Doty, keeping it out to preserve the lead.

Just two minutes later, Frostburg got their insurance goal, as Paige played a wonderful one-two down the line with sophomore Elena Fernandez, with the former crossing to Rebuck right in front of goal, as she calmly took a touch to control and another to sweep home for a 3-1 advantage. Gillette had an effort go just wide, then senior Skylar Ehart planted a shot off a free kick go high over the bar with GSU unable to get up the field.

Following a Pioneer goal kick, a loose ball found its way towards Fernandez, who was able to turn and chip the ball into the far post and bounce over the line for FSU's fourth of the night. The Bobcat defense held firm the rest of the match, not allowing Glenville a sniff at goal to hold on for the 4-1 final.

Frostburg had 17 shots on goal, with eight on target, while the Pioneers had just five and three, respectively.

With the win, FSU improves to 4-3-1 overall, while Glenville drops to 1-6-1. The Bobcats return home to host Charleston (WV) on Sunday, October 5 at 11 a.m. for Homecoming Weekend. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
