BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Football team maintained their unbeaten record, rolling to a 55-9 victory on the road against West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday night.
Â
WVWC began the game with the ball and got a quick first down, however senior CT Taylor came up with a big second down sack followed by an incompletion to force a punt. FSU wasn't able to get anything going on a three-and-out, giving the ball immediately back to the hosts. A pair of passes put them 71 yards down the field, the latter of which went for 51 down do the Frostburg 8-yard line. Back-to-back incompletions were followed by a short run, as the FSU defense held firm to limit the damage to a 24-yard field goal.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Jordan Brooks found some rhythm on a pair of plays, first finding classmate Tra'Shaun Timmons for 18 yards, then a nice move on the outside left sophomore Ray Adames wide open for a 55-yard pitch-and-catch into the endzone to get on the board. Redshirt sophomore Harrison Fritz went through the uprights on the point-after for a 7-3 lead. Frostburg then forced a quick three-and-out, aided by redshirt sophomore Carter Mazalewski breaking through on a screen pass for a five-yard loss.
Â
On the resulting drive, it seemed as if FSU would be forced into another quick punt, however some trickery dialed up by the coaching staff gave a direct snap to redshirt junior Owen Doyle out of the punt formation for 17 yards to keep the drive moving. Doyle and redshirt sophomore KJ Smothers grinded down the Wesleyan defense, totaling 32 yards on eight carries, as the former walked into the endzone for a 14-3 advantage.
Â
The Frostburg defense continued to hold the hosts' offense at bay, as a holding call called back a third down conversion, resulting in another punt. Brooks fired quickly to Timmons on a deep curl route for 18 yards, then two plays later, Adames found himself wide open yet again, this time off a play action for 41 yards to the house to go up 21-3.
Â
Continuing to struggle offensively, WVWC managed just three yards on their next drive, while the resulting punt landed in their own territory at the 43. Facing a 3
rd-and-5, Brooks fired a quick out route to Adames to convert, followed by a combined 14 yards between Doyle and Smothers. On first down from the 11, Brooks scrambled to his left off a play action and was quickly pressured, lofting to the endzone where Timmons made a great catch, keeping his feet inbounds for the TD. Fritz maintained his perfect record on the day in growing the lead to 28-3.
Â
In one of the more explosive plays for Wesleyan, Zayden Parker took the resulting kick-off back 35 yards trying to set something up for the offense. Jaylen Bragg was able to convert a 4
th-and-1 and get into FSU territory. Mazalewski came up with another big play, jumping to deflect a pass on 3
rd-and-5 to bring up another fourth down attempt, though this time WVWC had no answers as Frostburg took over on downs.
Â
After only gaining seven yards on three plays, this time FSU chose to go for it on 4
th-and-3, as Brooks tried a deep pass down the right sideline looking for redshirt sophomore Cruiz Paul-Umstead, who had his jersey clearly being pulled and drawing a defensive pass interference to keep the drive moving. Junior Landon Alexander then provided a spark out of the backfield, sprinting 23 yards down the left side to get into the red zone. It would be the Brooks-Adames connection that proved fruitful once more, as a defensive slip gave yet another open TD from 13 yards out for a 34-3 score following a failed two-point attempt.
Â
On Wesleyan's very next play following the kick-off, FSU thought they had an interception and the ball within the 10-yard line, however a roughing the passer flag instead put the hosts into Frostburg territory. A combination of Mason White and Quinton Pulley were able to drive the ball down to the 24, where a pass interference call eventually got down to the 12-yard line. With time winding down, WVWC decided to try for a field goal to put points on the board, however FSU came up with another big play, blocking the kick and going into the half up by 31.
Â
Receiving the ball to start the second half, Smothers brought the kick-off out 23 yards to the 35 and continued to carry the rock three times for another 23 yards into Wesleyan's side of the field. Brooks then fired a pass over the middle to Paul-Umstead for 31 yards, as Smothers eased into a 1-yard touchdown for a 41-3 advantage following Fritz' kick.
Â
Following a third down conversion and six-yard run, Mazalewski and redshirt junior Dom Tiaga helped ensure Wesleyan traveled no farther on a three-yard run stuff that resulted in a punt. With a slew of chunk plays that included Brooks finding Paul-Umstead and redshirt sophomore Amirr Coles for gains of 14 and 19, Doyle took the ball three times for 42 combined yards and his second score of the day to lead 48-3.
Â
Utilizing the run game, WVWC put together their longest drive since the first quarter, as Jayden Williams provided a spark for the hosts, going for 25 yards across four carries, while another roughing the passer call helped Wesleyan convert a 3
rd-and-9. Pulley then rolled to his right and found Amir Harris in the endzone for their first touchdown of the day, as a missed extra point made things 48-9.
Â
Alexander continued to impress with long run plays, needing just two carries to go 40 yards into WVWC territory, where backup redshirt freshman QB Blake LaBelle found redshirt sophomore Max Heineman on the right side for 21 yards and his first career passing TD. Another long kick-off return from Wesleyan gave them good field position, however they immediately started backwards on a false start and gained one more yard before needing to punt.
Â
Redshirt freshman Brett Patterson entered the backfield and impressed with a trio of carries going for 16 yards, but a pass off the hands of an FSU receiver fell into the arms of a WVWC defender for an interception to end the drive. Redshirt freshman Dean Tekam Kuiate made his presence felt on the first play, dropping White for a loss as another three-and-out ensued. Â
Â
Patterson continued to bruise through the Wesleyan defense, going for 23 yards on another three carries, while freshman AJ Thomas came on to convert a 3
rd-and-2 with his second handoff of the day. After two plays netted three negative yards, LaBelle had to scramble his way on 3
rd-and-13, picking up one extra yard than was needed to roll into the two-minute timeout still driving. Thomas and LaBelle then combined for 20 yards and wound down the clock, as time expired with the 55-9 final.
Â
Frostburg's rushing attack racked up over 304 yards and three TD's on the day, led by Doyle's 94 yards and pair of scores. Brooks finished 11-of-17 for 241 yards and four scores, both career-highs. Adames was his top target, racking up four catches, three of them for touchdowns, and 122 total yards. Mazalewski was all over the field on defense, tying three other players with five tackles while adding 1.5 TFL's and a pass breakup.
Â
With the win, FSU improves to 4-0 while WVWC drops to 0-5. Frostburg returns to Bobcat Stadium to host Concord on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m. for Homecoming Weekend. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
