#6 Huskies Overcome Field Hockey in High-Scoring Affair

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey fell in its PSAC road game against No. 6 Bloomsburg on Saturday by a 7-3 final.

FSU moved into Bloomsburg's territory early in the game, earning a corner at the three-minute mark but were unable to create a chance from it. The Huskies opened scoring midway through the quarter, netting twice in less than a minute. Frostburg attempted to respond with five minutes on the clock, but freshman Kenzie Cummins shot was blocked before reaching goal.

BU wasted little time getting back on the board in the second, needing just 36 seconds following a penalty corner for a 3-0 advantage. Senior Zoe Barnes made a save less than a minute later, then from that point, the Bobcats began to pick things up. Having earned a corner just over six minutes through the quarter, sophomore Sofia Boyle passed to the top of the arc to find senior Paige Leitzel, ripping a ball against the back of the cage for a 3-1 score. Junior Mikyla Rineer had a chance in the final minute to cut the deficit in half, but Husky keeper Maura Greek thwarted the opportunity.

After FSU had ended the half with some momentum, Bloomsburg swiftly put any hopes of a comeback attempt to rest within the first seven minutes of the third quarter. They needed just 42 seconds to net their fourth of the day, then were awarded a penalty stroke that was converted, followed by a third score 20 seconds later for a 6-1 lead. BU held Frostburg without a shot the entire quarter, while having their own remaining shots blocked, wide, and saved by Barnes.

The Bobcats continued to battle despite the deficit, as Leitzel and sophomore Layla Lagunas both drew saves by Greek. Freshman Caroline Earnshaw was the next to test her, as sophomore Rachel Young was denied while the former had a pair of chances on the rebound, converting the second one for her first career goal. With seven minutes to play, Young found junior Piper Taylor off a corner as she joined Earnshaw in opening her collegiate scoring account. The Huskies added a late goal with just seconds remaining in the game to take the contest 7-3.

BU held a 16-11 advantage in shots, with an 11-9 margin in efforts on target.

With the loss, Frostburg is now 1-7 on the season while Bloomsburg improves to 9-0. The Bobcats play again tomorrow, September 28 where they remain on the road at D'Youville at 12 PM. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
